Abigail Johnston Obituary

Abigail Johnston
07/30/2025
Our precious Abby was a gracious, thoughtful, clever, witty, perceptive, singular individual.
She died at her home, in the San Francisco Mission District, on July 30, 2025, at age 85.
She was a graphic designer, writer, family and neighborhood historian, word crafter, eclectic collector, near-obsessive puzzle master, and a steadfast loyal fan of the SF Giants, Steep Ravine cabins, birds, Bruce Springsteen, found objects, corner grocers, bubble baths...
She hiked and biked and, as a former New Yorker, took a certain pride in never having learned to drive. She generally toted a heavy backpack, loaded with every reference book that could possibly be of relevance that day.
Abby never had children, but along the way she acquired Sandhya, Cameron, and their son Zubin.
She endured the ordeal of her 2-year-long illness with such grace and admirable equanimity - consistent with her no-drama self-standard. The unwavering care and companionship of long-time husband, Steve, gave her love and security to persevere through such a rough circumstance.
Heartfelt thank-you to all her caregivers and friends, who kept her company amused and very much loved.
Abby's favorite worthy cause: The Mono Lake Committee.
