After 96 years with all of us, Barbara Lyon passed away unexpectedly on Jan 12, 2017, near her home in Fremont, CA. Barbara was born in Chicago, raised by her older sisters in New York City. In 1942, she met and married the love of her life, Boyd Vincent (aka B.B.) Lyon; postwar, they moved west to San Francisco where they raised five children. In the city, she danced, made music and painted. At 50, she returned to college and earned her BA from SF State, followed quickly by a MA from the SF Theological Seminary. After Barbara's husband was ordained an Episcopal minister, they made the move to Fremont, CA, where she continued to grow, diving into yoga which she practiced and taught to Fremont senior citizens to the end of her days. She also discovered poetry; at the time of her death, she was compiling a third volume for publication. Barbara leaned into life. She was forever pushing on possibilities, curious, searching out new adventures, new connections, new art. She backpacked in the Sierras, rafted rivers, lived abroad, always singing, always writing, always creating: sculpture, portraits, landscape watercolors, collages, many of which found their way to local exhibitions. She was a part of so many communities and so many lives; indeed, her talents were unleashed and her spirit fulfilled through these relationships. Barbara and Boyd were married for 63 years; he died in 2005. She is survived by her five children, an impressive group of grandchildren and great grandkids, a trio of nieces, a great niece, and cousins. Plans are being made for a memorial gathering in Fremont, CA in mid-February. Please contact the family for additional details. In lieu of flowers, tread gently on the planet and bring kindness into your community. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Dear Barbara, this is the year you were lucky to miss, although I know you would have found a way to creatively cope with it, and to also make the most of a very very bad situation. I still talk about you to many of my friends. Your exuberance still inspires and to that effect I have been using the wood blocks gifted to me by your Daughter to emboss some of my pottery. With every bowl plate and such I whisper hellos to you and I hope you hear me...
Forever missed

When I first met Barbra at my "Open Mic at the Essanay Cafe" in old Niles, I was dazzled by her unmistakable smile and her wonderful spoken word, and poetry. She always stole the show, so refined was her talent. She came often and I soon grew to love her like so many others. When I found that she was artist of many mediums, our shared experiences brought forth some wonderful discussions about painting, sculpture, dance, ceramics, acting, and yes music, all of which we found commonality. My only regret is that we never worked together on that sculpture we envisioned to be in clay and wood, perhaps I'll do it with her spirit beside me guiding me through every curve and straight.... Every time I think of her, tears of joy runs across my memory of her wonderful influence in my life. I will miss her till my dying day...Peace my sweet friend....

Barbara had the spirit of thinking more about
others than herself. She had a special energy
and warmth, kindness.

I had the great privilege of attending some yoga classes that Barbara Lyon taught through the Fremont Adult School. She was a wonderful teacher, so kind & loving.

Barbara was our Creative Writing classmate at Fremont City Senior Center. In 2015, Barbara won a place in the Honorable Mentions of Passager Book's annual Poetry Contest. In the Passager journal, she wrote: I write poetry mainly to put in words the pain and pleasure of being human, responding to what is around me, what is happening to my loved ones, the world. Poetry, painting and dance are my special tools for learning and healing. Now poetry has come forward as my first choice. What a wonderful and vibrant soul! We shall miss her dearly.

Barbara touched so many lives. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. I only hope we touched her in some positive way. I will remember her brightness and miss her hugs.
