An educator and advocate for multicultural education passed away on March 3, 2013 in Los Angeles, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was 84. Corazon was born in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines to the late Angel Florendo Alafriz, a schoolmaster, and Petronila Sison Alafriz, a teacher. She earned her BS in Education from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, her MA in Counseling from the SF State University, and her EdD in Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco. Her early professional years were spent in Manila as a high school teacher where she met the late Nestor Echanis Ponce, the love of her life. Nestor bested many suitors smitten by Corazon - a triple threat in the courting circles-a scholar, athlete and great beauty. After immigrating to San Francisco in 1968, she served the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) for over 30 years, as an inspiring teacher in the classroom, as a beloved counselor, and as a passionate administrator and protector of SFUSD's bilingual education program. One of Dr. Ponce's favorite positions was as Principal of Newcomer High School, one of the first schools in the United States for newly-arrived immigrant youth, empowering them with the skills and spirit to be successful in high school and beyond in American life. In many ways, Dr. Ponce empowered many people and family members. In the early 70s, Corazon and her husband Nestor helped found the Santiaguenians of the USA club, a still vital social network of Filipino-Americans with ties to Santiago, Ilocos Sur. Between work, home life, rooting for her favorite baseball and basketball teams (first the Giants and Warriors, but later, the Dodgers and Lakers), she was also very active in the Narvacaneans, USA, the Filipino American Educators Association of California, and the California Federation of Teachers. An avid cook, her kitchen served memorable meals to many friends, colleagues and relatives, always welcome (no reservations needed!) to her home in San Francisco. She leaves her dear sisters Erlinda Pingca, who lives in Los Angeles and was her fervent health care champion, Josefina Wi, who lives in San Francisco, and brother Marino Alafriz, who lives in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur. Her family, daughter Dr. Ninez Ponce, a professor at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, son-in-law Dr. Bob Nordyke, granddaughters Alexandra and Malaya Nordyke will remember her love, courage and dignity as she spent her last years in their home in Topanga Canyon. Memorial donations may be made on her behalf to the American Cancer Society.

Ninez—I am so very sad to hear of your mother's passing. She was an amazing lady who raised an amazing daughter. I always loved talking to Corazon—she had such energy and spirit, and I could tell her love and joy was her own family (and her granddaughters) and her extended family of children she influenced through the years. I will really miss her.
Take time to reflect on what a great lady she was—and how much of her is inside of you.
All my love,
Cheryl

Dear Ninez,
My sister Jane has informed me of Manang Cora's death. You may not
remember me, but en route to Manila from Toronto, I spent two nights
at your home back in 1971, along with a friend. Inday was visiting
with you at the time.
Your parents received us very warmly, and your mom was so motherly she
made us feel right at home. Although I never saw all of you again, I
remember those two days fondly.
Please accept my condolences - as well as prayers for eternal peace
for your mother.
Kindest regards,
Eleanor Abaya

I still remember going over to Manang and Manong Ponce's house when I was a kid and watching Godzilla with them. Manang Cora was always interested in how I was doing and regret not being able to see her in my older years. She would have been proud. Many condolences to you Ninez and family. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with you.

She was one in a million! A very warm person, truly generous and most of all caring. I will miss her. San Francisco will never be the same. She was always there to meet us at the airport,to see us off and to take us around the beautiful city by the bay.

Manang Cora warmly welcomed Lito and me to their house when we arrived in San Francisco in October 1970. Her hospitality never waned over the next 42 years and treated us as family members. We spent thanksgiving holidays with them, we traveled back and forth from San Francisco and Los Angeles, and stayed in touch until she fell ill recently. We will forever grateful for her warm love and genuine concern for everyone around her.
Sincerest condolence to you Ninez and family. We will pray for the eternal repose of her soul.

Very sad to read that Corazon has passed away. We visited in her yard when she came home a few weeks ago and flew back to Los Angeles. She was my neighbor since 1978 and we will miss her very much!
