David Korn Obituary

David Korn
05/07/1947 - 12/31/2024
Dave Korn passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024, at the age of 77, due to complications caused by 12 years with Parkinson's Disease. Dave was the dearly beloved, devoted, loving and caring husband of Jean Korn for 43 years; father of Eddie (Megan) Korn and Phil (Sara) Korn; and grandfather of Braeden Korn, MacKenzie Korn, Everly Korn, and Gemma Korn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Phyllis Korn; and his brother, Paul Korn. Dave is survived by his sister, Lynn; his two sisters-in-law, Joan Eagleson and Carrie Korn; cousins, Stephen (Amy) Marchand and Michele Marchand; and nephews, Eric (Leigh) Korn, Evan (Missie) Korn, and Brian (Paige) Korn.
Dave was a graduate of Holy Name Elementary School and St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco, excelling in academics and swimming. Dave received his Bachelor's in History at Gonzaga University in Washington. Dave earned his MA in Educational Administration from USF. He spent 42 years teaching at Cathedral School for Boys, where he taught math, science, history, geography, and physical education. Students at Cathedral who had Mr. Korn as a homeroom teacher would fondly remember days spent in "Korn's Cave" on the basement floor, along with "hands-on" electives, where they learned to make colorful fly lures for fly fishing or built outdoor Adirondack chairs to gift their parents or grandparents. Dave's passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom, and he spent his afternoons coaching soccer, basketball, and baseball at Cathedral School for Boys, as well as Our Lady of Mercy (OLM) Elementary School, where his sons went to school. At OLM, he was also an active member of the Parish Men's Club, assisting with everything from parish bingo to crab cioppino dinners, to annual festivals and fundraisers.
Dave's first true love was his wife, Jean, and he spent much of his free time with her and his boys, Eddie and Phil, at home and in their yard, where he enjoyed gardening and barbecuing. His other hobbies included reading, golfing, road biking, fly fishing, camping, and carpentry, as he liked working with his hands and his vast collection of tools in his "working" garage.
Dave spent his last two years at Peninsula Reflections Memory Care facility, providing him with quality care, compassion, and loving support, as did the hospice nurses, all the way through his last days. Dave will be dearly missed by both his family and friends.
Dave's Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, February 10, at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1555 39th Ave., at Lawton Street, San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association.

It is with deep sadness that I reflect on the passing of Mr. Korn, a teacher who felt like a father figure to me. His classroom was a place where I always felt welcome, and his presence was a constant source of comfort. I have so many fond memories of his warm encouragement and the way he taught geography - making the subject not just informative, but enjoyable.

Mr. Korn had a special way of making each of us feel seen and valued. I´ll always remember how he would jokingly call me "Goldilocks" in reference to my hair. He loved to poke fun at me and it made me feel important.

His kindness, patience, and dedication to his students were what made him a staple of the Cathedral School for Boys.

To his family, I send my deepest condolences and love. Mr. Korn´s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of crossing his path.

So many great memories with Mr. Korn. I was lucky enough to enjoy his wood shop intersession. He was also our soccer and basketball coach. Just an amazing educator, famous for the first term paper in all of our academic careers

My heart hurts reading this. Mr. Korn was Cathedral. I was fortunate enough to have him as my homeroom teacher in 2007 and also as a teacher for other classes. He was a wonderful, engaging, and tough-but-fair educator. He was an incredible role model for a young man to look up to.

I have so many fond memories of Mr. Korn. At the top of the list is the time he and his wife accompanied us on our trip to China. In addition to saving me from more than a few aggressive street vendors, we also got lost in a train station together. I had purchased way too many souvenirs and was struggling to carry all my bags. I fell behind the group, and Mr. Korn turned back, walked over to me, and helped carry my bags. As we turned to catch up, the group was gone. It took quite a bit of time to reunite with them. Later in life, whenever I saw him, he would always remember me as "the kid who got lost in the Chinese train station."

He was also the only teacher to send me out of class during my time at Cathedral. I had walked into homeroom and immediately made fun of Gonzaga for losing in March Madness. I learned pretty quickly that was a bad idea...

I have many many more memories from time spent with Mr. Korn. Sending all my love to the Korn family during this tough time.
