David Lein Obituary

LEIN, David Deane - 38, Pacifica, CA died suddenly early Sunday morning June 12, 2005 at his home. David was born on Sunday morning June 26, 1966 in Oelwein, IA, the son of Deane Scherman and Donna (Scherman) Lein. His father and brother were killed in an auto accident before his birth and on Feb 7, 1968, he was adopted by James Lein. David grew up on the family farm in Fayette County near Arlington, IA. He graduated from West Central High School in 1984, Iowa State University in 1988, and Texas State University in 1990. During a couple summers while in college, David used his warm and generous spirit to serve as camp counselor at EWALU near Strawberry Point, IA, as well as Anderson Camps in Eagle, CO. He was currently working on a history teaching credential at San Francisco State University. David met Vicki S. Kopecky at Iowa State University in Ames. They moved to San Antonio together while he was at Texas State University and then to San Francisco in 1990. On December 6, 1990 David and Vicki were married in San Francisco. While in San Francisco he was employed by the North of Market Multi-Service Center as a case worker from 1990 until 1992. Then in 1992, he became a senior social worker in the General Assistance, Training, and Educational Services (GATES) Program with the City and County of San Francisco. In 2001, he decided to go back to school to become a high school history teacher, one of his favorite subjects. Some of his favorite things to do were attending sporting events, being outdoors, hiking, listening to classic rock music, and reading about history. David is survived by wife, Vicki S. Kopecky of Pacifica, CA; parents Jim and Donna Lein; three sisters, one brother, one niece, three nephews, and a grandmother. He was preceded in death by his birth father and brother. Fifteen years ago, but still miss you brother David. The world has become a very bizarre place, much more evil than when you left it, although God the Creator is still ultimately in control. You were a great friend and brother. Cherish your visits to North Carolina and our long talks via phone. Hugs and love, -your sister, Sarah

Thank you Jesse Ray and Darrel Smith for sharing memories of your friend, David (my younger brother). Your messages warmed my heart. I miss him dearly, even to this day. He was indeed a very generous spirit'. David loved being with people, was a wonderful conversationalist, and just plain loved people. The world lost a wonderful person when he departed.

Dear friends and relatives of Dave,
I just heard of his passing. I hadn't kept up much lately, but we spent a lot of time together at Luther College from 1984-85. He was an incredibly generous spirit - we spent many a weekend in Lacrosse WI with crazy exploits. We hitched a ride to Toledo Ohio in 1984. We hung out in Ames IA too for a while. He was an amazing friend. He really helped me a lot to get through my bizarre first year of college at Luther. I really miss him as a friend. Please accept my condolences.

David,
Every June 12 and June 26 I think of you more often than usual. My sadness is still so profound. You would have been 45 this year. I miss our long talks by phone, and our infrequent, but wonderful, visits. Wishing you were still here on this earth; wishing things would have been different. I love you, brother.

Dear Vicki;

We lost more than a son-in-law, we lost a good friend. When David would stop by, we would lose all concept of time discussing history and politics. We are very sadden by his death. Our memorial is a donation to the Mary Greeley Hospital Foundation for diabetes education.

David was the best brother-in-law a man could have. He was also a very kind uncle. He had a huge heart and an easy-going approach to life. Everybody who has met David carries away something from him. Everybody who knew David has something of David inside them. We will always remember him, and our lives will always be richer because we have known him and loved him. God bless you David. We are with you and you are with us always and forever.
