Doris Godinez-Phillips Obituary

Doris Godinez-Phillips Age 64, passed away December 28, 2010, after battling mesothelioma for nearly nine months. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family - three children and seven grandchildren - and extended family and friends including women whom she has been very close to for three or more decades. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Dolores Bolaos and Felipe Godinez, and by two brothers, Felipe and Luis all of Mexico City. She is survived by her loving husband, Veril Phillips of San Mateo; her loving sister, Maritza Godinez de Rodriguez of Mexico City; loving children Raul Alarcn of Millbrae, CA, Yadira Taylor of San Francisco, CA, and (step-daughter) RoiAnn Phillips of Oak Park, IL; and seven wonderful grandchildren, Rick Betita, Grace Fondow, Ryan Betita, Bodhi Alarcn, Zoe Alarcn, Eva Phillips-Fondow, and Xol Safai. Born in Mexico City in 1946, Doris immigrated to San Francisco in 1966, where she soon began work as a community organizer focusing on housing and job development through her employment with the Economic Opportunity Council, Southwest Council of La Raza, the Mission Language and Vocational School, and the Mission Housing Development Corporation. After earning a B.A. degree in Political Science at San Francisco State University in 1978, she earned a J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1982. During her last year of law school she clerked for the California Supreme Court. As a practicing attorney she worked as a staff attorney for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, served a few years as corporate counsel in the private sector, and then joined the Law Department of the U.S. Postal Service in 1987, where she remained until her retirement. From 1999 to 2006, she was Managing Counsel for the Southwest Region. During her twenty years in the USPS Law Department, she mentored numerous individuals and won several awards, including the Dot Sharp Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 and the "Women Putting Their Stamp on the Postal Service" in 2004. After returning to the Bay Area in 2006 and retiring in 2007, she was active in politics and provided leadership for social justice programs in the Congregational Church of San Mateo. A memorial service for her will take place on Friday, January 14, 2011, at 2 pm, at the Congregational Church of San Mateo (CCSM), 225 Tilton Ave., San Mateo, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Godinez-Phillips Social Justice Fund, payable to "CCSM".

On the too few occasions I had opportunity to chat with Doris, she interacted so personably; with empathy and genuine interest. I remember feeling in the presence of one who knew Joy; Joy founded on Wisdom; Wisdom born and developed by a life lived loving and serving others.
Peace and Blessings to you Veril and to all the Godinez-Phillips Family.

To Veril and your family, our hearts are with you and we wish you as much inner peace as possible during such times.

Doris’ spirit will always be a bright burning star in my life to remind me of the goodness of life. She made you feel so special and appreciated. If you were sad or worried, those feelings disappeared when you were in her presence--even if it was for just a brief moment. Thank you for the joy I received from your sharing of Doris in my life.

Inner peace to you and you family.

We walked the same path together in our working life in the Southwest Area. I couldn't have done it without you! In hardships, you made me smile! In good times together, you made me laugh! During shopping trips on the road, we forgot to count calories!! Though miles and time have separated us since our retirement, you and Veril, were in my thoughts and heart. On your separate road, Heaven awaits its most recent Angel. My prayers are with you and your family until God reconnects us all.

I will always remember meeting you years ago at a gathering in our backyard when I was married and living in Fremont, California. The sparkle in your eyes and Veril's beheld a special kind of love, indeed. How blessed you were to have shared that together for all of this time.

To Veril and all of your family, may you sense anew a faith filled future as you pick up the pieces of your life day-by-day. You all remain in my prayers.

Vaya con Dios, Doris. I am glad that you are finally at peace after a difficult time. Veril: there are times when words are so hard to find to express the breadth of emotion felt, and this difficult time of loss seems to be one of them. Doris will always be the epitome of grace and style, a unique gem whom you were fortunate to find and accompany for too brief a time. We will all miss her generous spirit and loving heart, and feel much pain for the hard and painful path that you both had to endure. Our Love and Prayers are with you and the family. We were all lucky to have our dear cousin Doris in our lives. She was highly motivated and driven to succeed as a teenager and made us proud with her achievements and compassion. She was a distinguished member of the Bolanos family, being born in Managua, moving to Mexico and then to California. Doris was very loving to my father Guillermo and to my Mother Victoria. She was so proud of her children and and was happy with Veril. We have fond memories of Doris.
