Douglas Johnson Obituary

Douglas Wayne Johnson

Doug Johnson, 78, of Inverness, CA died unexpectedly on March 6, 2016 of cardiac arrest. Born in St. Paul, MN on August 23, 1937 to Edith and Stanley Johnson, Doug spent his early childhood in Minnesota and moved with his family to Palo Alto at age 11. He attended Palo Alto High School and San Jose State University, where he graduated first in his class.

Doug loved business, and he loved being a CPA. He went to work at Arthur Andersen immediately upon graduation from SJSU, and spent several years there until leaving to become Controller of Itel Corporation in San Francisco. He held several positions within that company, before serving as President of Decimus Corporation, and finally as Chief Financial Officer of Lucasfilm. Doug left the corporate world at age 50 to pursue his first love as a Certified Public Accountant. He practiced as a sole practitioner until the day he died. He took great pride in the personal relationships he developed with his clients and truly loved helping people.

Doug was very proud of his Swedish heritage and his involvement in community organizations. He served as Chairman of the Margoes Foundation for many years, as Commodore of the Inverness Yacht Club, and as President of the Inverness Tennis Club. Before moving to Inverness, he enjoyed playing tennis for most of his life at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco. Doug also loved trains and his model railroad, pitching horseshoes, and telling jokes. Many friends have remarked that he is remembered to be smart, witty, kind, and the life of the party.

Doug is survived by the love of his life and wife of 45 years, Ann Johnson, daughter, Holly Williamson, son-in-law, Yale Williamson, and granddaughter, Sage Williamson. He is also survived by his daughter, Kristen Johnson, granddaughters, Ashley Simpson and Ami Simpson, grandson, Cole Simpson, and son-in-law, Mark Simpson and his wife Cheri, as well as by his brothers, Miles Johnson and Daniel Johnson.

Family and friends are welcome to join a Celebration of Life on April 2, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at the Inverness Yacht Club. For those who wish to honor his memory, donations can be made to the Inverness Foundation – Attn. IYC Youth Sailing Program.

I was greatly saddened to hear of the loss of our beloved Doug. He inspired us all and aided my life significantly with his words of wisdom. It was just last month that I was sharing with my sons - ages 12 and 14, his wise advice which went something like this: "If you have not failed repeatedly, you have never risked accomplishing your wildest dreams".
In honor of Doug (who I will remember always in his blue shirt and wool vest), I will continue to welcome errors as opportunities for growth. For this and so much more, I will sorely miss Doug.

I have lost the dearest, kindest, most honorable friend that a man can have.
All of us who knew him are diminished to lose this swell friend, who had a genuine interest in and respect for us all (no matter how much we disagreed), a twinkle in his eye, a voluminous repertoire of jokes that only he could tell, and personal integrity that none of us can match. So long, Doug. So sorry Ann, Holly and the family.

The photo is such a good one - captures the sparkle, openness and "good cheer" that Doug always had. Knowing Doug was to feel inspired to contribute my own time and talents to passions since he so clearly was always generous with his. It was also to know that you would be teased :), but with such kindness you never cared. And, Doug definitely met his match when he met Ann. What a complentary couple they were. Much love and support to Ann and family and thank you Doug for all the Good Cheer.
