Frank Hamilton Obituary

Frank Scott Hamilton III

Timpanist

Frank passed away on March 31, 2016 at the age of 67. He lived in San Francisco with his loving wife Victoria Ranjo-Hamilton and is survived by his daughter Francisca Hamilton-McCown (Jesse) of Oakland; his sister Susan Lang (Barry) and nieces Nita and Sally of Santa Barbara.
Frank studied timpani at Juilliard under the renowned timpanist Saul Goodman of the NY Philharmonic. He loved being invited to play his kettledrums at music festivals--most notably the Stanford Mozart Midsummer Music Festival and the Carmel Bach Festival.
He was invited by Maestro Sandor Salgo in the 1980's to the Modesto Symphony to play with the orchestra. After leaving Modesto Symphony he played at many other orchestra venues in the Bay Area.
Frank was the principal timpanist at the San Francisco Community Music Center under Maestro Urs Leonhardt Steiner, and look forward to playing the annual holiday performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
In April 1978 he was immortalized by Herb Caen in the San Francisco Chronicle: "Instant chuckle: eight baby-sized blue Keds on the feet of Timpanist Scott Hamilton's kettledrums at Calvary Presbyterian for the Bach B Minor Mass and Sunday before. Only way he could keep his drums from sliding across the marble floor."
At his behest there will be no funeral services.

Looks like Frank went on ahead of us.
I have tried to locate him the last few years but only saw this notice today. He was a good friend in the 60's and 70's. I lost touch with him. Frank was also a great bicyclist in his youth and raced too. We graduated from San Carlos High School here in 1966 (their 50th reunion is coming up this summer)
I miss him and send my condolences to you All,
Karl (Toivo) Dresden

To Auntie Vicki and Fran,
I'm so sorry for your loss. We all will remember Frank. I will miss him at the major family gatherings. Watching him as he rolled his own tobacco into cigs. Him always ready to be seated at the card table. Be it the Sunday Rummy or the occasional Poker Table.

If there is anything you guys need, we are always here to help.

I always enjoyed cooking for Frank as he appreciated my signature dishes. We both enjoyed a good glass of wine along with a Cuban Cigar, I have lost a Cigar friend.

Frank was a very talented musician and a good family man who will be missed by family and friends.
I'll always remember him as a good caregiver for our mom. He would take her blood pressure and keep a record of it. He also did some housework for mom and did some cooking. I remember when he cooked some split pea soup and he gave me a bowl. I must admit that it was pretty good.
I extend my condolences to Vicki, Fran and everyone in the family circle.

Sister Vicki,
I'm so sorry about Frank's passing. He was someone I counted on to always be around. I love Frank for caring for Mama through the years when she needed 24/7 care. It was sweet how just the two of them would play cards in the middle of the day. I'll miss Frank dearly and always remember him at Sunday Cards.
