Harvey Klein Obituary

Harvey Zeesy Klein, M.D. In San Francisco August 28, 2008. Dr. Harvey Klein was born in Pittsburgh, PA, April 23, 1934. He attended school in Pittsburgh and receiving his medical degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. After his residency, he went into the Army and was stationed at Fort Baker, CA, from 1964 -1966. He found California to be his true paradise and stayed following his discharge. He remained in Sausalito and joined the staff of Mt. Zion Hospital, where he eventually became the chief of pathology. After the merge with UCSF, he became clinical professor of pathology. Harvey loved his work and "missed his microscope" whenever he was away too long. Harvey is survived by his wife of 31 years, Patricia; along with daughters Emily and Amanda; and a son Anthony. He had 12 grandchildren and four dogs, all of whom he loved deeply. Harvey loved pink and purple polo shirts, jelly beans, chocolate and berry pie. He loved watching sports on TV and driving around in his old Dodge Dart convertible with the top down. Grass would grow on the carpet mats from all the golf "stuff" on the floor. He didn't care. He loved Hawaiian shirts and the golf ball retriever he used as a second driver. He also loved traveling to exotic places with his wife Pat. His favorite pastime was hanging out at Peacock Gap with his best friend Art. Aside from his work, golf was his passion. Those who knew and loved him as we all did, appreciated his sarcastic sense of humor, wit and profound intelligence. He was generous, kind and loving to all he knew. He will be deeply missed by all. Graveside services will be held at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery, 2500 - 5th Avenue, San Rafael, Sunday, August 31 at 2 pm. Contributions can be made to the Harvey Z. Klein Endowment, c/o Dr. Abul Abbas, UCSF Dept. of Pathology, Box 0102, 505 Parnassus St., SF 94143-0102.

With heavy heart, I learned today that Dr. Klein has left us. I worked for him in his office at Mt. Zion Hospital from 1975 to 1977. How the staff enjoyed teasing him, with his gentle ways! He will always remain one of my favorite people. We lost touch after 1977 and about a year ago, I googled his name and found him at UCSF. I sent him an email and we exchanged many laughs about "old times" in our pathology office. He had not forgotten a thing! My deepest sympathy to his family. Rest in peace, my friend. Thinking of you will always bring a smile to my face.

I interacted with the good doctor just about daily. You don't think people you work with are that important until they're gone.... I just saw the vase of flowers in front of his office door. My prayers are with his family.

The world has lost a great man, a guy who I loved to talk to with his calming and joyful personality. We will miss him dearly.

My heart goes out to Harvey's family and many friends - the world is a sadder place without his wit and sarcastic smirk. I had the great pleasure to spend a lot of golf time with harvey - veiled as lessons - in the end I think just an opportunity to talk about golf and life, and his dogs, and yes, Pat too! A rare human being, taking his golf but not himself seriously. My heart aches all the way on the east coast - a nice glass of red tonight to you , my friend.
