John Dickmeyer Obituary

DICKMEYER, John Paul - Surrounded by his devoted family, passed away at home in Orinda on May 22, 2005 at the age of 63. John was loved and cherished by his wife Nancy; his daughter Christine and son-in-law, Jeff Thomas; his daughter Rebecca and son-in-law, Nate Ducsik; his sons Alex and Ross Holton and his daughter Catherine Holton; and grandchild-to-be, Ducsik. Born in 1942 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, John graduated from Valparaiso University, received his medical degree from Indiana University and was accepted for a nephrology fellowship at UCLA. He served his country during the Vietnam War as a major in the Army Medical Corps and practiced medicine in the Bay Area for over 20 years. He was passionate about his chosen field of nephrology and worked diligently to improve kidney disease management throughout the country. Outside of his family and medical practice, John's "other love" was his golf game. A longtime member of Orinda Country Club, John made innumerable friends there and called the club his home away from home. John put his heart and soul into his friends and family. Everyone fortunate enough to be touched by John's smile and his endearing and infectious energy will remember the impact John had on their lives. Each day we will carry on his loving spirit; his compassion and kindness will encircle us. His family invites his friends to share in a celebration of John's life, which will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday June 1, at Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive Lafayette, CA 94549. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Hospice of Contra Costa County, 2051 Harrison Street, Concord, CA 94520.

I should have know John's middle name was Paul, for he too was a great man. Despite his intellectual brilliance and worldly success, John was a man of great humility and compassion. He was untiring in his efforts to help the sick and suffering and he was a true gentleman, a rare jewel. He and his family are in my prayers.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my Brother and friend. We both shared in service to our country, and were members of the same Fraternity pledge class. Fond memories of John will be remain with me particularly his love for his fellow man. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends at his loss.

My prayers are with John's family and friends. My memories of John are those years we were together at Valpo and brothers in Phi Kappa Psi. Just seeing Johns name brings back memories of his smile and great personality. All of us who ever had the opportunity to spend time with John were truly blessed.

As an "outside" member of the Orinda gang I had the opportunity to be a part of numerous trips to Scotland, Ireland and England with John since 1993. I have wonderful memories of these trips and the great times we had golfing, in the pubs and on the bus rides. A lot of laughs and stories. He was the "commissioner" of these trips and they won't be the same without him. A great guy.

John was a great colleague. He was visionary with starting Golden State Nephrology, perservered through many ups and downs, and was instrumental with getting RMS DM to be successful. More, he was a gentleman, generous, and will be greatly missed.

I have fond memories of John as a boy and later as a young man.
