Joseph Ehrman Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Ehrman III

Joseph Ehrman III was born December 27, 1923 in San Francisco, California, to Jean Meier Ehrman and Joseph Ehrman, Jr., and died here October 22, 2021. Aside from wartime service and college, he lived his entire life in the City. He and his sister, Patsy, spent summers through 1937 at Menucha, the summer home of their grandparents Grace and Julius Meier, in the Columbia Gorge near Corbett, Oregon. He vividly recalled extending his stay in 1930 into the fall while his grandfather campaigned successfully for Oregon's governorship.
Joe attended public schools in San Francisco, including Lowell High School, and graduated from the Menlo School in 1941. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, he trained in coast artillery anti-aircraft and was enrolled in the Army Specialized Training Program at Indiana University. When polio struck him in Indiana, he was placed on "limited service" and appointed a projectionist in an army movie theater.
A Boy Scout for 85 years, he joined Troop 14 (Rah!) in 1936, becoming Assistant Scoutmaster in 1944 and its 10th Scoutmaster in 1952, serving in that position for 49 years (he then returned to the role of Assistant Scoutmaster). During his tenure 256 young men achieved Eagle Scout rank. He himself earned his Eagle in 1944, and among the many BSA honors he received were the District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver, and a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow; he was named a Distinguished Eagle Scout in 2010. In 1949 he was elected National Commander of the Knights of Dunamis, an Eagle Scout Honor Society. He relished his time at Camp Royaneh in Cazadero, California, where he served on the camp staff for many years, and he attended five national jamborees and three world jamborees.
Joe attended Antioch College in Ohio; the University of California at Berkeley (Bowles Hall), where he earned a BA in Education in 1948; and Stanford University, where he earned an MA in Education in 1953.
He devoted his entire professional career to education, teaching for 34 years in San Francisco—30 of them at Lowell High School, where from 1952 to 1983 he served as a teacher of mathematics and mechanical drawing, counselor, testing coordinator, head counselor, and finally dean of students. He served on the Lowell Alumni Association's board of directors for 35 years (23 as its treasurer) and as a board member of Enterprise for High School Students.
As a lifelong technology enthusiast, Joe was a movie projectionist from the age of six and took many family home movies treasured today. He was an early adopter of computers and other high-tech devices.
In 1969 he married Diane Roth Steiner, whom he'd known since childhood; she survives him. For many years they lived in the Sea Cliff area, more recently at the San Francisco Towers on Van Ness Avenue.
His sister, Patricia Ehrman Ehrman, predeceased him in 1969. His "niblings" (as he called his sister's children) are Spencer M. Ehrman, Jr., Debra-Jo Ehrman Kaye (and husband Ted), and Susan Ann Ehrman. Their children are David Spencer Ehrman, John Gable Ehrman, Mason Ehrman Kaye, Robert Ehrman Kaye, Rachel Patricia Ehrman-Dupre, and Joseph Vladimir Ehrman-Dupre. They all delight in memories of Joe's love of family and his folded-napkin "mouse". He leaves four great-grand-niblings.
Joe belonged to the Concordia-Argonaut Club since 1928 and stayed in excellent physical condition his entire life. He worshipped at Temple Emanu-El, where his stepfather, Irving F. Reichert, long served as rabbi and his wife, Diane, held many positions in the Sisterhood. His passions—beyond scouting and education—included car travel, photography, and the opera, theater, ballet, and symphony.
Inurnment will be in the Joseph Ehrman family mausoleum in Home of Peace Cemetery.

My early life was strongly influenced by Joe. I was a member of Troop 14 during his tenure as Scoutmaster and spent 5 memorable summers at Camp Royaneh. Without Joe's encouragement (and more than a little prodding) I doubt I would have advanced to become an Eagle Scout. Joe also taught me Algebra at Lowell (class of 1965), the only math skill I still use. Besides Troop 14 and Lowell, our lives seemed to follow a similar trajectory including my growing up in Sea Cliff, attending Temple Emanu-El, and graduating from Cal where I also lived in Bowles Hall my freshman year. Thank you Joe, for all you gave to me during my formative years. My sincere condolences to his extended family.

I was one of Joe's boys from 1963 to 1966, on the AV Crew he managed for Lowell. I was also on the Stage Crew, managed by Carl Koening.

Although I never took a math class from Uncle Joe, or a physics class from Mr. Koening, I spent a lot of time in their offices. They loved students and loved giving their time and life experience towards mentoring them.

My fondest memories of Joe Ehrman were the times he'd give me a ride home up Eucalyptus Avenue to Juniperro Serra Blvd. in his white Chrysler convertible with red interior.

He liked to play classical music on the AM radio from either KDFC or KKHI. FM Stereo was just in its infancy.

I was amazed at how many pieces of classical music Joe recognized just from hearing them played. I think my love of classical music was a direct result of his willingness to teach me, in little bits and pieces, a lot of what he knew about it.

Joe Ehrman was one of a kind. He had so much class and education, we knew he must have come from a wealthy family, but he never talked about it.

He didn't need to work for the money, he did it because it was something he loved doing and generosity was such a part of his character. He was so good at whatever he put his mind to accomplishing.

I did not know until I read this obituary that he survived polio. He was a very private man.

I learned about polio in my early teens because my uncle Louis C. Samuels also was stricken by that disease. The three Samuels boys also attended Lowell before I did.

My deepest condolences to Joe's family and friends. I hadn't seen him since I graduated in 1963, but I never forgot him and never will.

RIP Joe.

My most enduring memories of 1T4, Rah, were our first meeting interview for admission, Troop Room meetings of course, but Camp Royaneh, my initiation into SRH and SS and Joe teaching the troop semaphor flag communication. What a hoot! Most importantly the firm kindness of instruction, guidance and instilling personal integrity, truthfulness and team building have endured throughout my life. Thank you Joe. May you rest in peace knowing your Troop lives on.

I came to know Joe as a Troop 14 parent. What a remarkable man, a man of service, principle, duty and rectitude. I think I speak for all parents of Fourteeners in expressing my gratitude to have had the influence of a role model of such abiding decency in our sons' lives. Joe was the perfect embodiment of his, the Greatest, generation, and that is saying something indeed. Thank you, Joe. OAFM AAFM. God bless you and may you rest in peace.

The troop was, and is, an exceptionally important part of my life and childhood. Joe, you were such an exemplary leader. You taught us young men to be empowered, trustworthy and have a sense of duty. Your soft touch and smile lifted me up and helped form me into who I am today. The troop that you crafted was special. It was not just a Boy Scout troop: it was Joe's creation. I have especially fond memories of our interactions in the troop room, you leading from there, helping us out front. Your traditions and efforts mattered to me, and so many others. Thank you for your life of volunteerism and the inspiration you provided.

It is unusual and admirable enough for a person to have been a pillar of one great San Francisco institution. Joe Ehrman was a pillar of two: Troop 14 and Lowell High School. He inspired generations of young San Franciscans to live with integrity, to strive for excellence, and to serve our community and nation. A man of rare rectitude, Joe truly led by example.

I was so fortunate to have learned from Joe in my most formative years at both of those institutions: at Troop 14 (1969-73); at Lowell (1972-75).

Joe's legacy will endure in our City and in the lives of the thousands he encouraged and taught.

Troop 14 is the finest troop in the US, and there would be no Troop 14 without Joe. His high standards, seamless organizational skills, and devotion to the institution made it was it is. There are many hundreds of us who owe him a serious debt of gratitude. Joe is a legend.

I along ,with Chuck Breyer, was Joe's first Eagle Scout. He was an incredible scoutmaster who created character in all of us. I have not, nor will I ever forget him and how he shaped my life.

Despite his request in recent years for me to call him "Joe", he will always be "Mr. Ehrman" -- a respected educator, guide for young people and model community member whose integrity, genuineness and consideration should be emulated by all, young or old, of any background. He was extraordinarily giving of his time and love to the Lowell community and others. I and we will miss him. Rest in Peace.

In my mind, Mr. Erhman, you never aged and were always the wonderful teacher that I said, "Hi!" to every day at Lowell. That is the memory I love best - the enthusiasm with which you taught us all and my admiration for you was equally strong. I always saw you with a clipboard and always on your way somewhere with a mission. I hope Heaven is ready for you!! We will miss you here. And I especially feel for your friends and family who loved you best. We students will always remember you. With love and smiles.

Having known and worked as Joe's colleague on the Lowell Alumni Association board of directors for much of the past 30 years, I know that the world has lost a truly honorable man -- a real Boy Scout in every sense of the word. I was with Joe last on February 29, 2020 at the last in-person Lowell HS class reunion before the pandemic shutdowns began and he was just as congenial and sharp as ever. Condolences to Diane and all of Joe's family and friends.

What a wonderful man Joe was! He formed the character of so many adolescents, his Lowell students and his scouts at Troop 14, Rah! It was a privilege for me to work with him and learn from him when I was Outdoor Activity leader for the troop when my son David was a Boy Scout.
