Laimonis (Ben) Ilgvars Berzins, passed away in Alameda on April 29, 2015, at age 87. Laimonis was born on October 26, 1927 in Valka, Latvia, to Janis and Pauline Berzins, and was a long-time resident of Alameda, California. Laimonis is survived by his wife, Lija Berzins of Alameda, his son, Peter Berzins and his wife, Deanna, of Alameda, and his grandson, John Berzins. He was preceded in death by his son, Raymond L. Berzins (in 2001). Laimonis had an aggressive form of Sarcoma cancer.
Laimonis was a military veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a retired business owner of Golden Gate Die Casting in Oakland, California. Laimonis loved life, people and most of all his family. He was always the life of the party with his distinctive Rodney Dangerfield looks and humor. He loved Bay Area sports, especially the Oakland A's and the Oakland Raiders. He was a member of the Oakland Raiders Booster Club and a Cal Bears Booster. Laimonis was the Treasurer for the Northern California Latvian Lutheran Church. He will be missed greatly by friends, family, and neighbors.
