Larry Weinberg Obituary

Larry Weinberg

Sept. 24, 1954 - May 5, 2013

Larry was born in San Luis Obispo to Sanford and Betty Weinberg. He was happily raised in Santa Rosa and Westlake, and from the time he was seventeen, San Francisco was his home.

Larry had a lifelong love and appreciation for music. He started playing drums at very young age, forming his first band "The Silencers" in 1966 with friends Norman Maslov, Kirk Dove and the late Dany Walker. Later that same year they recorded their first and only 45 RPM record I Don't Care b/w Blastoff. The band evolved into "The Overnight Flight, performing at parties, fairs and school functions. They continued playing into the early 1970s.

Larry's life in retail sales began very early, after working for and with one of his best friends and mentors, Jim Beale (Mainline Gifts). Larry created and ran four successful businesses including: The Male Box, Family Jewels and Goosebumps with partner Deb Mosk and Something Anything. Larry and Deb ran Goosebumps for thirteen years, closing the store in 1995. He loved his stores and his retail life and had many fond memories of his customers and all of his staff (especially the Goosebumpers).

In 1998 Larry joined Norman Maslov's photography agency, opening and leading a commercial illustration division. Larry loved the challenge and camaraderie of representing his illustration artists, collaborating with them for a full ten years, until the division dissolved in 2008.

Larry and Hilary met in 1995. They dated for several years despite Larry's protestation that he would never "commute" nor cross the Bay Bridge to Berkeley to date. Married in April of 2003, they celebrated their 10th anniversary this year in Hawaii, one of their favorite places to visit.

Larry was a very special friend, mentor and "Uncle/Unc" to many of his family's and friend's children. The number is too vast to name individually here; you know who you are.

Larry is survived by his wife Hilary, mother Betty Weinberg, sister Lori (Tom) White, Uncle Morris Weinberg (Claude). Nieces and nephews; Marie, Audrey, Charlie and Celeste. Cousins Cheryl and David Lipsky (Ethan) and Nancie Guillory (Cory, Casey & Brittney) and his sisters-in-law Valerie (Ron) and Cecily (Bogdan). Ex-wife Deb Mosk (Debra Shapiro). Larry was predeceased by his father, Sanford Weinberg. Private family services were held Tuesday, May 7th 2013.

Contributions can be made to any of the following charities in Larry's memory: Pet's Unlimited, Lymphoma Leukemia Society of America, amfAR: The Foundation for AIDS Research or Little Kids Rock.

Larry and I went to Sunday and Hebrew school together and high school together. On a few occasions, our rock bands battled it out. Of course, his band, The Overnight Flight, beat our best. Larry was always the trend setter – always in fashion. I loved his smile, dry sense of humor and his passion for photography. We stayed in touch via an occasional phone call and Facebook. He was always quick to acknowledge milestones in my life especially when it came to my two boys.

I am so sad that Larry is no longer with us and miss him very much. Attached is a photo of Serramonte HighSchools' Yearbook staf taken in 1972. Larry's beaming face is third from the lower left wearing a helmet.

I have been BLESSED to have known Larry almost my entire life as we grew up together in Westlake. We stayed in touch through the years following Serramonte High School as he married Debbie who I used to babysit when she was growing up.
The years went on and he made many visits to see my family in Boulder, Colorado where he stayed with us at our ranch. There are so many fond memories of him there: riding my horses with my goats following along as he headed up towards the Rockies/Flatiron Mountain Range, he learned all of the animals names, he marveled with each and every animal story we had and best of all he clearly made it known he cherished watching my four children grow up.
Josh, Brett, Tess and Mitch have grown up being loved by Larry. All four have known him their entire lives and cherish the many fond memories of him based around music, visits to Chinatown, Joe's of Westlake, the Children's Museum in S.F., Facebook and Skype chats, to name a few. All four of them know Larry as family. How can I describe him? Father figure, big brother, Uncle, buddy, confidant?
In the past 10 years, Hilary came into our lives through Larry and we were blessed again. She added a new side to him and it was wonderful to see him grow through their love.
Larry clearly celebrated the goodness in my children and I can not express this enough. He was proud of them and their accomplishments and acknowledged them for all that they did. I always felt that in part, their self-esteem grew because of their "family" connections with him. I loved watching him argue with Josh and Brett-we called them the Three Stooges. Of course Larry was "Larry." :-) There was a certain art when arguing with Larry and Josh and Brett joyously jumped in. Years later the twins were born-and Tess and Mitch jumped into Larry's life as if they had not missed a beat.
I believe all 4 of them are better people because of him. I know that I can say the same thing for myself. He always made me feel like the world's best mom, even at times when I probably wasn't.
Larry was loyal as a friend-honest yes, and with that extremely loyal. I always knew where I stood with him and I always felt like coming home when I was around him.
Larry, I thank you for the time on Earth you spent with us and with all my heart I love you. We will watch over Hilary and our sweet kitty for you.
Love always, Laur de
