Lloyd Liebes Obituary

Lloyd Liebes, Jr. died peacefully at his home in Chico on January 23, 2017. Born in NYC, Lloyd lived in the S.F. Bay Area for most of his life. Lloyd began his career at his family's stores, H. Liebes & Company, an iconic S.F. department store established in 1864. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 during the Korean War era before returning to his family's store as the head of advertising. He worked there for fifteen years before beginning his life-long career in both photography and fine arts photography. During the 1970s, he photographed celebrities and models in addition to shooting stills for many companies including Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Royal Viking and American Airlines. He also worked on the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, where he collaborated with other photographers to develop a revolutionary widescreen film lens. Lloyd also owned and operated the Liebes School of Modeling in San Francisco for over 10 years. Lloyd most recently developed some of his finest fine arts photography, focusing on the drama of nature in all its light and shadow, complexity and mystery.Lloyd is survived by his wife Angela Risdon of Chico, CA., his sister Ruth Shavel, his former wife Enes Rice, his children Joanne Liebes-Carruth, Richard Liebes and Ruth Harrold, all of the Bay Area, and 8 grandchildren, Charles, David, Jamie, Dan, Gina, Elle, Austin, and Jordon and 6 great grandchildren. His oldest son Lloyd III preceded him in death. Lloyd's memorial will be at 1 pm on Saturday, February 11, at the Unitarian Universalist San Mateo, located at 300 E. Santa Inez Ave., San Mateo. Please make donations to The International Wolf Center at wolf.thankyou4caring.org, a charity he supported in memory of his much beloved dog, Crow.

A million years ago I took your modeling course in SF. It was at the first apartment that was by Gough. Many fun memories of learning from top people in the industry about makeup, walking etc. I was 16 at the time and I still have my portfolio shot by you. I wish I had kept in touch but you know how life goes. Lots of great memories from another time. RIP dear Lloyd

We will miss your bright smile and warm laughter. You were a talented artist with a keen eye for beauty. I learned about both sides of the camera working with you at Liebes Studio in San Francisco. I enjoyed many visits with you and especially at the holidays with my parents. It was always exciting to see which photo of San Francisco you would bring to my dad for his birthday. You transformed your signature and talents to focus on flowers and lighting. Your body of work is a magnificent legacy to beauty that surrounds us. Your warm nature will be missed by all who knew you. May you Rest In Peace.
