Marc Goldstein Obituary

Marc Evan Goldstein

March 1, 1935 - September 30, 2015

San Francisco architect, Marc Goldstein passed away peacefully on September 30, 2015 at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving family, including his wife Diana Goldstein, his children Evan, Karen and Rachel Goldstein from a previous marriage, his stepdaughter Gabrielle Crawford, and his grandchildren Antonio Lucchini, Elena and Adam Goldstein.

The son of Esther Coplon Goldstein and Arthur Goldstein of New York, Marc was born in 1935 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and attended the Bronx High School of Science. He studied industrial design at the University of Michigan for two years before transferring to Yale University's School of Architecture where he received his bachelors and masters degrees. There he studied under Louis Kahn, Paul Rudolph, and Vincent Scully.

Following a Fulbright Scholarship in Italy, Marc moved to San Francisco in 1959 and in 1961 began a thirty-year career with the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) where he was a Design Partner from 1970 to 1989, after which he became a Consulting Partner until 1991. At SOM, Goldstein was involved in the design of many local, national, and international buildings including San Francisco's 345 California Center, the Bank of America building, the Wells Fargo Center in Los Angeles, and the Mauna Kea Hotel in Hawaii. After his career at SOM, he taught in the Architecture Program at the California College of Arts for several years. In 2003, he received the American Institute of Architects San Francisco Chapter Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession.

Marc and Diana shared a rich life with family and friends, traveling the world together and participating in the cultural life of San Francisco. They also enjoyed being in nature and made frequent visits to Yosemite and the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center.

A memorial service will be held at a future date, details to be announced.

I worked as Marc's "secretary" for several years in the late 70s and early 80's. He was so talented and I always admired his intelligence. I just learned of his passing. So sorry.

I am very late to discover this news. I met Mark years ago - after his stroke & while he was teaching. He was so happy to be out of the grind & to be spending his days reading with the cat & to then go teach. Wished he'd done it years before. I'm so glad he got to do that in comfort! I'm so glad that after all he did on such a global level - he was able to draw back in & be himself & be with his own & LIVE his fullest life & really for quite a few years before his physical passing. His marks are indelible. What an apropos name for him.

Very early in my career as a young architect of 26, I joined SOM San Francisco in their Production Department. I met Marc while preparing the documents for a project he had designed. I was honored when he asked me to be the project manager on another special project of his for Sears Roebuck. He introduced me to travel across the USA and to other professionals of the highest caliber. I will always remember Marc for his design talent and problem solving brilliance. He gave me a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow professionally in my work with him.

I'm sorry for your loss, Diana. The saying about Christopher Wren ("If you seek his monument, look about you.") is hardly original but very true.
