Marjorie McCarthy Obituary

Marjorie McCarthy

January 11, 1939 - November 8, 2018

Marjorie McCarthy was born in San Francisco to Francis and Kathleen Clothier on January 11, 1939. Marge was a loving and devoted wife to her husband Andy for 56 years, until his passing May 29 2017.
Marge was also a loving, generous and proud Mother and Grandmother survived by her son, Stephen (Mary) and Grandkids, Kelsey, Kendall and Conner and also her son, Brian who Marge referred to as "her rock". Brian lovingly cared for his parents over the past nine years, seeing his father through Alzheimer's and his mother through Parkinson's and ovarian cancer.
Marge is also survived by her cousin, Barbara Kane (Julian), and her daughters, Kim and Kerri, her sisters-in-law Kathleen and Eleanor McCarthy, her sister, Marilyn Fenneman, her niece, Lisa, and her godson, Ted Pollak .
There are also a
dozen plus "adopted grandchildren " who gave her and late husband Andy great joy the past 22 years.
Marge was raised in San Francisco a graduate of Lincoln high school (1956) .
She returned to college after having children and graduated from San Francisco State College, with her teaching credential. She then went on to teach at Crestmoor, Mills and Capuchino high schools. It was while teaching Early Childhood Education at Mills that Marge realized there was a rising need to bridge the gap between babysitting and kindergarten. This prompted her to open her first preschool, Hoover Children Center Burlingame, (1980) which over the next thirty plus years, expanded to ten locations. She was an amazing business woman and had many wonderful teachers and staff who she admired.
A faithful friend and someone who always put others first, Marge was a person of great strength and courage possessing a resilient spirit, true love and appreciation for life. Her elegance, class, kindness and empathy for all, touched everyone who had the opportunity and privilege to know her. Over the years Marge made many lifelong friends spanning from her early childhood, her classmates from Lincoln High School, through days of raising her children in Burlingame, her professional life as a high school teacher, and on through her years in business. Marge and Andy had wonderful friends and memories at their summer house in Kelseyville.
Diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2003, and stricken with ovarian cancer in 2016, Marge accepted her illnesses with dignity, never complaining or letting on to others that she suffered. Although her body was failing, her amazing dry sense of humor, sharp wit and interest in her friends and loved ones remained. She lived a loving and thoughtful life until her final days. She passed in Burlingame surrounded by her son Brian, her good friend Marie Pollak, her caregiver Kim Kautai and family friend, John Hayes on November 8, 2018.
