Maurice Boulos Salib

Maurice Boulos Salib Passed away on July 26, 2008 in Hayward, CA, at the age of 78. Maurice was born in Acre, Palestine in 1930, the son of Boulos Salib and Najla Azzam. After leaving Palestine in 1948, he moved with his parents, brothers, and sisters to Cairo, Egypt, where he lived for many years. He taught Arabic language at the American University in Cairo, and after moving to the US, he taught at UC Berkeley, where he earned his MA and PhD in Near Eastern Studies; and where he also met his wife, Signe. He wrote the textbook "The Spoken Arabic of Cairo" which was used at AUC and many universities in the US, and he co-authored an English-Arabic dictionary. Maurice is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Signe Salib; daughter, Shirley Salib; brother, Anis Salib, and wife Rhonda of Huntsville, AL; sister, Sohaila Salib, and husband, Albair Hanna of Cairo, Egypt; nieces, Randa and Dalia Rene Youssef; and nephew, Christopher Salib; brother-in-law, Kenneth (Gail) Doxtader; brother-in-law, Lawrence (Susan) Doxtader; and sister-in-law, Lynn (Jack Noble) LaRosa; as well as many cousins in the Middle East, Europe, and the US. He is preceded in death by his mother and father; his brothers: Ramses and Victor; sisters, Salma and Sumaya; and brother-in-law, Rene Youssef. Maurice had a passion for teaching, and will be remembered as a patient and caring teacher, who was loved by the many students he touched during his career. His generous and warm personality and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Most of all he will be remembered as a wonderful and loving husband and father.
