Michael Moriarty Obituary

Michael John Moriarty
04/08/1945 - 05/20/2024
Mike passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 20, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was a loving husband to his wife of 51 years Maureen (Culhane) Moriarty, a loving father to Sean Moriarty. A loving brother, father-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and true friend to many. Mike was predeceased by his parents Con and Eileen (Brosnan) Moriarty, brother Pat Moriarty, daughter-in-law Jessica (Reynolds) Moriarty.
Mike was born in Tralee. Co. Kerry Ireland on April 8, 1945. With his parents and brother Pat, immigrated to San Francisco in 1948 where his sister Ann (Pat) Aherne was born. Mike attended St. Peter's Grammar School. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1963 and went to work at Metropolitan Life Insurance. Mike worked in the insurance industry for over 50 years.
Mike started playing Gaelic football at an early age and learned to love the game and the Irish community. He treasured the hours he spent training and playing the game. He was passionate about his love for the Gaelic Athletic Association and was a longtime chairman and officer of the Western Division Board of the San Francisco GAA where he promoted all the Gaelic sports. Mike loved volunteering and serving the Irish community and spent many hours promoting his culture. He was past president of the United Irish Cultural Center, United Irish Societies, Kerry Athletic Club, and Shannon Rangers Football and Hurling Club. Mike was the Grand Marshal of the 2011 UIS St Patrick's Day Parade.
Mike was a proud member of Epiphany Parish for over 50 years. He was inducted into the Epiphany Athletics Hall of fame in 2011.
Mike was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia in 1989. Showing his true fighting Irish spirit Mike underwent and survived a bone marrow transplant. Mike fought many health battles throughout his life and finally succumbed to dementia.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 31, at Church of the Epiphany, 827 Vienna St. San Francisco. Visitation 10:30am, rosary 11:00am, and Mass of Christian Burial 11:30am.

In my 15 years in San Francisco I had the privilege of knowing Mike. I played football against him . I worked with him both as a member of the Western Divisional Board executive and as a delegate representing Young Irelaners. I also played football where Mike was the referee. A pure Gentleman and a Gael trough and true. Deepest sympathy to his family and
many friends. Ar Dheis De go raibh a ainm dilis.

The kindest, gentlest, sweetest, Uncle any girl could ask for. You will be missed immeasurably. I'm certain my Dad welcomed you with a big hug and a joke to make you laugh. Thank you for all the memories, Uncle Mike.
