Michael Phillips Obituary

Michael John Phillips October 21, 1945 - January 9, 2006 A native San Franciscan and a key technical advisor for Nikon, Michael died suddenly at home January 9. He was 60. Michael was a graduate of Lick-Wilmerding, and his college years were divided between UC-Davis and San Jose State. He joined Nikon in 1970 and spent his entire professional career with this peerless Japanese camera firm. In addition to acting as liaison between Nikon and top-echelon professional photographers, Michael was often asked by Nikon to shoot important events himself, given his brilliance behind the lens. There were Olympics, World Series, Super Bowls, Kentucky Derbies, Cape Canaveral launches and much more. Michael is survived by his mother, Marie Phillips Japs of Davis; his sister Suzanne Finigan of San Francisco; his brother Kirk and nephew Collin, both of northern California. There will be no formal services, at Michael's request. Any memorial contributions in Michael's memory should be made to a charity of your choice.

Mike was a fine friend, a great story teller, and my resident music and movie critic. I used to love to listen to him tell of his experiences that photography led him through. I shall miss him and his infectious laugh. I think he was a founding member of the "F8 and be there" School of Photography.
