Oakley Hewitt Obituary

Oakley Hewitt, M.D.
February 16, 1937 - November 6, 2021
Oakley Hewitt passed away November 6, 2021 after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease.
Oakley had tremendous curiosity and a great zest for life. He was a voracious reader and loved traveling the world and exploring new places. He attended theater, opera and symphony, visited museums listened to jazz, and participated in, and in later years watched sports, particularly tennis, hockey and bicycling. He was also a generous supporter of the arts.
Oakley was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, spending summers in Buck Hill Falls, Pennsylvania, Cape May, New Jersey, and Saratoga, Wyoming. He attended Princeton Country Day School, Lawrenceville and Yale (where he was a member of the Glee Club, Delta Kappa Epsilon and Book and Snake). After attending architecture school at Yale, Oakley served in the United States Marine Corp at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune. The following two years were spent in Denver and Cheyenne, where he decided to enter medical school at University of Colorado School of Medicine. After graduation, an internship at the Public Health Service in San Francisco and an orthopedic surgery residency at UCSF, Oakley went into practice for a year in Concord, Massachusetts. He then returned to California and joined the orthopedic surgery department at the Palo Alto Medical Clinic (now Foundation), where he had a gratifying practice for 37 years.
Dr. Hewitt is survived by his wife, Alice Ames Morison of San Mateo; son Christopher Oakley Hewitt and his family (wife Barbara Brunson Hewitt and grandsons Samuel Brunson and Nicholas Oakley Hewitt of Austin, Texas); daughter Elizabeth Carleton Hewitt and her family (husband Keith Scarborough Koegler and grandsons Kurt Watson and Oakley Scarborough Koegler of Palo Alto); and his former wife, Stephanie Hewitt, of Palo Alto, California.
Plans for the Celebration of Life are pending until early next year.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to: Alzheimer's Association, 2290 N. 1st Street, San Jose, CA 95131 or www.alz.org/donate.
