Richard Clair Obituary

Richard "Dick" Clair

July 7, 1931 - August 8, 2016

Richard "Dick" Clair, 85, of San Francisco, died peacefully on August 8, 2016 with his family at his side.

He was born July 7, 1931 in Minnesota, and grew up in Los Angeles. Class president and cheer captain at Narbonne High, he was drafted into military service during the Korean war. He earned his degree in architecture at UC Berkeley, then worked for private firms in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Community Design Center, and the San Francisco Bureau of Architecture. Notable projects include the Santa Rosa Sonoma County Public Library and Oakes College at UC Santa Cruz.

Dick had a passion for the natural world. He kayaked the bay, and biked the peninsula well into his seventies. He trekked the Tetons, Yosemite, the Cascades, and the Selkirks, summited the Grand Teton and Pingora Peak, and always slept best in a down sleeping bag under a starry open sky.

He married Evelyn in 1967, and together they fought for worker's rights, social progress, and peace. Their children Bryan and Michelle, and grandchildren Ben and Rebecca carry his values into the future, with hope and love.
