After a valiant struggle with cancer, Robert W. Carson passed peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his wife and three children singing his favorite songs. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Bob attended Vanderbilt University on scholarship and earned his M.D. degree from the University of Tennessee. He completed Residency at the Orthopedic Hospital in Los Angeles. It was there he met the love of his life, Honora O'Shaughnessy from Australia. Bob and Honora moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1960 where their children were born and raised.
In the late 1970's and early 1980's Dr.Carson was one of the true pioneers in the emerging field of arthroscopic surgery. Long before medical schools and orthopedic residency programs took notice of this truly revolutionary and minimally invasive technique, Bob was on the faculty of many postgraduate programs teaching other surgeons world wide how and when to perform this demanding technique. He invented and developed the Novell and the Carson Operating Arthroscope for Stryker Corporation and was a founding member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He exemplified the clinician who always put the patient first and sought to do more for his patients by doing less to them.
For the past twenty-five years Dr. Carson has had an Orthopedic Consulting practice in San Jose and Mountain View, and also has been a Clinical Instructor at Stanford University.
He is survived by his wife, Honora, of 55 years; children Sean, Shannon and Erin and four grandchildren.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 22, at The Family Farm, 1400 Portola Rd., Woodside, CA. Donations may be made in his name to: San Miguel Community Foundation, Pro Musica, 220 N. Zapata Highway #11, Laredo, TX. 78043. These funds will further music education in the poor schools in the outlying area of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
