Sara Maurer Obituary

Sara Graham Maurer
01/29/1955 - 11/07/2024
Sara Graham Maurer of Tiburon passed away peacefully on November 7, 2024, after an 18-month battle with glioblastoma stage 4, a type of brain cancer. She died in her bed overlooking San Francisco Bay surrounded by her family.
A fourth generation Madison, Connecticut native, Sara was born on January 29, 1955, attended schools in Madison and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. After law school at Suffolk University (where she won the Moot Court award), Sara worked at Ropes and Gray in Boston, and Debevoise and Plimpton in New York. She was proud of the fact that she passed the Massachusetts, New York, and California Bar on her first try.
Sara moved to San Francisco in 1988 and launched her own firm focusing on civil litigation. In her practice, she was a champion for the underdog, from victims of catastrophic injuries to workplace harassment and sexual and child abuse. Sara volunteered at the Ross Valley Players (where she appeared in several plays). She taught a program teaching mock trial skills to students at Kennedy High School in Richmond, as well as a class on applying theatrical techniques to the courtroom at the annual meeting of the California Consumer Attorneys.
Sara was a vibrant and charismatic spirit in all situations. Those who knew her were touched by her vivacity and humor. She was a great storyteller, a skill she used effectively in the courtroom. One fellow attorney, marveling at Sara's courtroom performance said she "could talk a dog off a meat wagon."
Sara is survived by her husband, Greg Johnson; and her daughter, Margot Johnson of Tiburon; as well as her sister, Mary Maurer; and mother, Marilyn Maurer of Madison Connecticut; and her sister, Jane Maurer; brother-in-law, Harlan Reiniger and their son, Alex Reiniger of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Additionally, she is survived by her brother-in-law, Eric Johnson, his wife, Kit and daughter, Gillian of San Luis Obispo. Her father, Charles Maurer, predeceased her.
A celebration of Sara's life will be held at St. Stephens Church, in Belvedere, on December 13, at 3 PM.
Contributions in her name can be sent to the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Society.

Here is Sara with the students she loved and inspired at Kennedy High School in Richmond, just a few weeks after her brain surgery! She's in the red cape (of course) on the far right.

Sara and I met in 1972 as American Field Service Exchange students. We spent that first night waiting out the hurricane that destroyed much of the east coast. We survived the first ever pilots strike during that trip to Costa Rica. We had harrowing times and Everytime we got together over all these years it's always been a fun and exciting time. We bonded, we considered each other as sisters. I cannot find the words to express my condolences to Greg and Margo. We have all come together to hold Sara up during the last 18 months. It was unimaginable that our vivacious, beautiful, and brilliant Sara is gone. I believe we will be together again when our Lord Jesus unites us. So it is so long my friend R.I.P. till we meet again.
