Thomas Gregory Fogarty May 25, 1916 - May 23, 2010 Tom was the beloved husband of the late Viola (Paulson) Fogarty who were married in San Francisco on January 7, 1939. He was the father of Thomas and Loretta Fogarty, Mary Samson, and Christine Steltzner and the late Katherine Hourigan. He was grandfather to Robert, Gregory, and Keri Hourigan, Tiernan, Riley, and Molly Fogarty, Kaitrin Fogarty, Viola, Kaleb, John Thomas, and Elizabeth Samson, and Allison, Laura, and Justin Steltzner. Tom was also blessed with 9 great-grandchildren. Tom passed away peacefully at the family home in Napa with family members at his side. Tom and Viola moved from San Francisco to the Napa Valley in 1960. He enjoyed making his home a welcome place for his family members and close friends. His children and grandchildren have very fond memories of the family gatherings, swimming, playing games and great meals that Viola prepared. He will be greatly missed. Tom attended the University of California at Berkeley, and later received his master's degree from Sonoma State University in 1969. He once said that it was "one of the happiest days of his life." Tom was a retired Police Inspector of the San Francisco Police Department, California State Park Ranger and Director of Nurses' Training at Agnews State Hospital. He was also an instructor at Solano Community College, teaching California history, just one of his great passions. Tom was active in the Commission of Aging and served on the Board of Directors. He also served as California State Senator in the Senior Legislature at Sacramento for nine years, representing Napa and Solano counties. He also was member of the Board of Directors at Sonoma State University Alumni. He was a member of Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society, Native Sons of The Golden West, and a Hospice volunteer for nine years. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Joan of Arc Church in Yountville, CA on June 5th at noon. Prayers will follow at the St. Helena Cemetery on Spring St. and he will be laid to rest with his wife Viola, and first born daughter, Katherine. The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. Kako, M.D., and all the family and friends that helped with our father's care in recent years. We also appreciate the supporting care and advice given from Napa Valley Hospice. We would like to thank Monsignor Joseph Alzugaray and the Sisters of Mercy at St. Apollinaris Parish who so kindly visited our father with the last rites and singing on the day he passed. The family has suggested that contributions in his name may be made to Meals on Wheels and the
American Heart Association. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family online at www.treadwayandwiggerfuneralchapel.com.
