Clarence Goodman Obituary

Major Clarence Emory Goodman, Jr.

Major Clarence Emory Goodman, Jr., 95, of Shreveport, Louisiana passed away on Monday, June 27, 2016 after a lengthy illness. He has been a resident of Shreveport since 1965.

Emory was born on September 7, 1920 in Kyles Ford, Hancock County, Tennessee, to Clarence Emory and Martha Baker Goodman. Born the oldest of five children, he was close to his two brothers and two sisters. He enjoyed sharing stories of life growing up in Tennessee, including his experiences helping his family at the Goodman's General Store in Kyles Ford. He was a 1937 graduate of Hancock County High School. Emory always had a love of learning. He received a BA Degree from the University of Tennessee; Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee Law School; as well as a Master's Degree in History from Louisiana Tech University. He was the Editor of the Law Review at University of Tennessee Law School, a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies, and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He also taught classes in military and general law for the University of Maryland and other institutions, and gave lectures on numerous subjects throughout the course of his life.

He served as a decorated line officer in WWII in Europe and as a Judge Advocate during the Korean War. After 20 years of service, he retired from the military in December of 1964. He then served as a Civilian Attorney at Barksdale Air Force Base for 23 years. He found his work serving the men, women, and families of Barksdale rewarding, and wrote weekly articles on preventative law and legal assistance. Upon retirement, he was recognized for Distinguished Service to his country and thousands of clients over the years.

He was honored to be elected to the Barksdale Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and served on that board for 32 years until 2010. It was very gratifying to him to be a part of the tremendous growth and expansion of the credit union through those years. He would be so pleased to know that while BFCU continues to proudly serve the military and civilian personnel of Barksdale Air Force Base, it also serves over 1000 companies, associations, and churches, and is now the largest locally owned credit union in Louisiana. The years Emory spent serving the BFCU meant a lot to him, and he cherished the friendships made during that time, and the people he and his colleagues on the board served. In his spare time, he enjoyed attending Shreveport Symphony concerts, local theatre productions, and going to the movies.

Emory was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Vivian Marsalise Goodman and their three children: son, Dr. Robert Emory Goodman and wife, Cindy; daughter, Anne Goodman Marston and husband, James Gray "Jimmy" Marston, III; and daughter, Joan Goodman Baten; his five grandchildren, James Michael Goodman, Phillip Emory Goodman, Caroline Marston Deniakos and husband, Nathan Deniakos; James Gray Marston, IV and wife, Courtney Phillips Marston; and John Michael Baten, Jr.; and one great-granddaughter, Chandler Elaine Deniakos. Emory is also survived by two sisters, Lucille Goodman Reed, of Morristown, TN and Inez Goodman McBee; and brother-in-law, John McBee of Kingsport, TN; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Moles Goodman, of Cookeville, TN and Carolyn Goodman of Knoxville, TN; and many nieces and nephews.

Emory was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Emory Goodman and Martha Baker Goodman; two brothers, Lt. Colonel William Penn "Bill" Goodman, and Dr. George Goodman; his brother-in-law, Paul Reed; and nephew, Paul Emory Reed.

Emory's family would like to express their deep appreciation to Dr. Paul Rushing, Dr. Carlton Gregory Houtz, Dr. Robert J. Massengill; and the wonderful staff at each of the following: Christus Highland Hospital, The Oaks of Louisiana, Live Oak Health Center, and Christus Hospice for their compassionate care. The family would like to extend a special, heartfelt thanks to Emory's devoted caregivers: John Ella Gipson, Alfred Carroll, Tina Martin, Anita McLeroy, Ella Patterson, Diana Taylor, and Tonya Washington; and his friends and colleagues from the Barksdale Federal Credit Union Board of Directors.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, at Osborn Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 522 E Flournoy Lucas Rd, Shreveport, LA 71115 with Fr. Pike Thomas as celebrant. Interment will follow at Forest Park Memorial Mausoleum, 3700 St. Vincent Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71103, with full military honors.

The family suggests that memorials may be given to The Sisters of our Lady of Sorrows, 9894 Norris Ferry Road, Shreveport, LA 71106; Society of St. Vincent de Paul c/o St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 522 East Flournoy Lucas Road, Shreveport, LA 71115 or a charity of the donor's choice.

The Final Salute

Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to Clarence Emory Goodman, Jr. our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Emory. And to Emory it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Army. Emory, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 961 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Emory's family and loved ones.
