Stephen Jenkinson Obituary

Stephen Jenkinson, M.D.

San Antonio - It is with great sadness that my loving husband of over 48 years has gone to be with our daughter in heaven. Steve accomplished many great things in his lifetime but the most important to me was that he was a wonderful husband and friend. He was born December 9, 1947 in his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana where he went to Centenary College and was in the first class of the LSU Medical School in Shreveport. His mentor there was Dr. Ronnie George, a professor of pulmonology. Not surprisingly, Steve became a pulmonologist and critical care doctor who eventually became the Chief of Pulmonary Critical care at the UT Health Science Center and the South Texas VA. He held that position for 25 years. Dr. J trained many of our nation's top pulmonologists and critical care doctors. He recruited, and mentored numerous faculty and trained more than 100 fellows, many of whom still practice in our San Antonio community today. Steve was the Doctor that everyone loved. He worked endlessly and has touched lives all over the country. Steve had an extensive list of hobbies including bird hunting, golfing and was an amateur archeologist. Steve loved spending time with his wife and best friend Suzie, and their Yorkie, Charlie. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Preceded in death by their daughter Dr. Stephanie Jenkinson in 2010, his mother and step-father, Jane and Harold Terry, his father, Steve Jenkinson, his step-brothers David Terry, and Clay Jenkinson. Steve is survived by his wife, Suzie Jenkinson, his sister Sharon Reed (Tom), his niece June Bennett, and step-sister Shannon Wiley (Ken).

I remember Steve when everyone in the fraternity he belonged to (Kappa Sigma - Epsilon Chapter) possessed great futures and freedom of mind. His interest in fraternity life was exemplary.
My sympathy to his surviving family and close friends.

Steve was a consummate physician and role model to me as well as many of these docs on this list, some of whom further trained me. He was always patient, professional, and very very thorough and spoke his mind when necessary to clarify situations. Many thousands of patients have benefitted from his talent, knowledge, and expertise, and he remains an icon of stature of those esp. from the 1st class of LSUMC in Shreveport. This was and is a very special group taught by a very special set of Professors and Deans. When he smiled at you and began to demonstrate or teach, it just worked better. That's a fine quality. He will be missed.

A Salute of Appreciation

Military personnel have traditionally rendered a “Salute of Appreciation” to those employees of the Veterans Administration who have dedicated many years of professional service in aiding and caring for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

This “Salute of Appreciation” is rendered to Dr. Stephen Jenkinson a loyal professional at the South Texas Veterans Hospital who provided many years of dedicated care to U.S. Armed Forces Veterans. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we veterans have for Dr. Jenkinson. And to Dr. Jenkinson it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank his for his service and devotion to his family, his country and to thousands of military veterans. Dr. Jenkinson we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of Legionnaires, VFW Comrades, Disabled Veterans of the DAV and the Voyageur Militaire of the 40&8 Society we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Dr. Jenkinson’s family and loved ones.

Steve and I worked together in Chest. He was always a joy to be around. He was the consummate physician. He was kind and thoughtful and always helpful as a colleague. He made this world better. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Steve Jenkinson was a compassionate and caring physician who made medicine and the world a better place because he lived. Rest In Peace Steve.

He probably trained or helped teach or was a colleague of my own pulmonary doctor. Doctors talk and learn from others in that field. Thank you for trying to help people in that medical field.

Steve was a great doctor and friend. He was the Doctor you wanted to see come in your room as you knew he would make sure you got the best care. You were in expert hands with him watching over you. He had a contagious personality and everyone wanted to be his friend . He loved to have a good time. Susie may you be comforted in knowing how much he loved you and the memories of your great times together. With deepest sympathy. He will be greatly missed. Thinking of you, Jane.
