Winston Moore Obituary

Winston E. Moore, Jr., MD

June 11, 1947 to

December 24, 2014

Winston Eugene Moore Jr., M.D., died unexpectedly on December 24, 2014. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and a celebration of Win's life will follow at 2:30 p.m., on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at Grace Community Methodist Church, 9400 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, Louisiana. Officiating will be Rev. Betsy Eaves.

Win was born in Monroe, Louisiana, on June 11, 1947, to Mary Jane Davis Moore and Colonel Winston E. Moore. With a father actively serving in the United States Air Force, Win grew up all over the United States. At the early age of 14, he proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America while living in Warner Robbins, Georgia. Win attended Bangor High School in Bangor, Maine, until his senior year. He graduated from Fort Hunt High School in Alexandria, Virginia, while his father attended the National War College of the United States. Win earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he was an active and enthusiastic member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He was a faithful and devoted LSU alumnus and Tiger sports fan for the rest of his days.

Upon graduating from LSU in 1969, Win received a direct commission as a second lieutenant into the Medical Service Corps of the United States Air Force. He was assigned to the U.S. Air Force Regional Hospital at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, serving as the Medical Supply Officer for Eglin during the Vietnam War. He was commended for his service and was honorably discharged at the rank of first lieutenant in 1972. While serving, he also completed and received his Masters of Business Administration from the University of West Florida in Pensacola.

Win joined the management at Gerlach Meat Co. in Shreveport in 1972 and spent several years there before being drawn back to the medical profession. He earned his M.D. at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport in 1980. He completed his residency in anesthesia at Parkland Medical Center (University of Texas) in Dallas, Texas, in 1983. He returned to Shreveport to practice anesthesia for the next 31 years. Beginning in 1998, he served as the Chief of Anesthesia at the Surgical Specialty Center in Shreveport. Since 2007, Win served as the Chief of Anesthesia at Specialists Hospital Shreveport. He was dedicated to his patients and his profession.

Win was an avid runner and diver, obtaining certification as a master diver. He loved animals and had many special dogs in his life over the years. He greatly enjoyed music, Lionel trains, Corvettes, the LSU Tigers, exercise, a tidy home, and a meticulously cared-for lawn! In more recent years, Win discovered a great love for both Cross Lake and the mountains of Colorado. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, son, brother, and uncle. He loved his family. He was a lifelong Methodist and faithful churchgoer, attending Noel United Methodist Church and Grace Community United Methodist Church for many years. He was one of a kind, and he will be missed tremendously.

Win was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Winston E. Moore and Mary Jane Davis Moore, and by his brother, Nathan Moore. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Word Moore; his children, Jennifer Moore Rosenblath and husband Coty, and Winston E. Moore III (Trey); his stepsons, Patrick Yoder and wife Elisabeth, and Carl Yoder and wife Simone; his grandsons, Henry, James, and Edward Rosenblath; and his step-grandsons, Oliver, Graham, and Thomas Yoder.

Honorary pallbearers will be Winston E. Moore III, Coty Rosenblath, Patrick Yoder, Carl Yoder, David Adams, Don Updegraff, Jim Alexander, Jim Fortson, and Alan Richards. Chartible rememberances may be made to the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, 3511 Youree Dr., Shreveport, LA 71105 or Grace Community United Methodist Church, 9400 Ellerbe Rd., Shreveport, LA 71106.

I still think about Win and this being close the anniversary of when he left this earth, he is on my mind. I recall all of the good times; laughing in the operating room, taking me out for my bachelor party and talking about going over the Cross Lake bridge at 90 mph in his Corvette. He was was so accomplished and was a huge inspiration for me to go back to school and get my RN degree. Miss you buddy.

Wilbur Reynaud, another Deke brother, just informed us of Win's tragic death. Sissy and I are deeply shocked and saddened over his sudden death. I first met Win when he was Treasurer of the Deke Chapter at LSU and I was president of the alumni association. What a guy. We had an instant bonding and I will always treasure our good times together. Sissy and I enjoyed his visits to our home and even at our rental on Pensacola Beach when he was in the Air Force.

We had a long telephone conversation a couple of years ago when I was trying to get his interest in helping with the renovation of the DKE House at LSU. He updated me on his family and his work, both of which he loved deeply.

May fond memories sustain the family during these difficult times. A memorial gift is being sent to the animal charity he supported.

It has been more years than I can remember since I saw Win, but I will never forget how cool I thought my older cousin was when I was in middle and high school, and the twinkle in his eyes. My prayers go out to your family in this unexpected loss.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Dr. Moore for 4 years at WK. He was a solid anesthesiologist and was very fair and equitable in his professional activities. I was also blessed to know Diane during those years. Dr. Moore was a creature of habit and could be found at his favorite restaurant on any given Sunday around 4:00. I always knew he was around when I spotted his Corvette in the parking lot. Rest in everlasting peace, Dr. Moore. Condolences to you, Diane. Please let me know if there is anything you need help with. 455-3435. Steve.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Winston E. “Win” Moore, Jr. our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for “Win”. And to “Win” it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Vietnam War while serving in the U.S. Air Force and for his many years as an Educator in the Louisianan school system. “Win”, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to “Win”'s family and loved ones.

In my seven and a half years in PACU at Specialists Dr. Moore was the anchor, the constant. His only absences being his vacation trips to Colorado, we worked side by side with the goal of doing our best for our patients. He never lost patience with me. If I asked him once I asked him a hundred times, "Dr. Moore, how long will this block last?" He was my walking encyclopedia. He could infuriate me barging into my patient's room to interview them before I was ready or consfigating my chart when I needed it. If I could just have him back I promise I would never complain again! Dr. Moore called us "his girls" and defended us when we didn't have anyone to do it. There was no one cooler in an emergency -no one I'd rather have with me than he. Thank you Dr. Moore and to you Diane for the kindness you have shown me since I came to SHS. I will always love you both.
