Allen Butcher

Virden - Allen" Butch" Butcher, 81 of Virden, IL passed away at 6:05 p.m. Monday Dec. 6, 2010 at his home.

Allen was born April 18, 1929 in N. Otter Twp. IL a son of Ira and Velda Guthrie Butcher Sr... He married Rhea Dawn Stewart in 1953, she passed away in 1963, he than married Barbara Jean Smith in 1964 in Virden, IL.

Allen worked as a utility lineman for CIPS for 30 years retiring in 1987. Allen was a U.S. Air Force Korean War veteran; he was serving on the Otter Lake Water Commission Board and was member of the Virden American Legion. He was a former member of the Virden City Council, Virden Library Board and former Sangamac Ambulance Board member. He was very active in the formation of the Virden Little League, and Junior Football League.

Allen is survived by his wife Barb of Virden, IL; sons Brad (Nancy) Butcher of Springfield, IL, Brent (Kim) Butcher of Niles, MI, a daughter Dawnal (Mark) Mahan of Chatham, IL, 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death was his first wife, Rhea Dawn Butcher, brothers Alvis and Lowell Skeens, Ira Butcher Jr. and a sister, Virginia Helmerichs.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday Dec. 9, 2010 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, IL with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Friday Dec. 10, 2010 at the funeral home. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday Dec. 10, 2010 at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Hagaman, IL. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Virden, IL or to Ronald McDonald House, Springfield, IL. Please visit calvert-ferryfuneralhomes.com to leave a comment for the family.
