Carl Szabo Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Carl Joseph Szabo, 82, of Springfield died at 10:56 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at his residence.

He was born June 8, 1927, in Springfield, the son of John and Agnes Markovics Szabo. He married Dorothy Chasco on April 19, 1952; she preceded him in death on July 8, 2009.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jonette Eck; a brother, Jack Szabo; and a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and James Kulavic.

He is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Szabo of Chatham and Ann Szabo of Springfield; five sons, Carl Edward (Hope) Szabo of Chatham, Mike, Kevin and Eddie (companion, Cheryl) Szabo, all of Springfield, and Joe Szabo of Windsor; 13 grandchildren, Jennifer, Chrystal, Justin, Kara, Ryan, Jeremy, Jessica, Daniel, Amie, Michael, Kyle, Kristen and Jason; a sister, Mary (James) Talken of Crest Hill; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special cousin, Joe Markovics of Springfield.

Carl was a lifelong resident of Springfield.

He was a letter carrier for the United States Post Office, retiring after 36 years of service.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II. He was a member of Church of the Little Flower, Knights of Columbus 4179, where he served as a past Grand Knight, and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Carl was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears fan.

In his early years he played horseshoes, loved to hunt and earned the nickname "Duck." He enjoyed playing cards, gardening and was devoted to his wife and family. He lived his life for them and their happiness.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 4 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at Church of the Little Flower, with Monsignor John Ossola officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Church of the Little Flower.
