Darrell Dean Evans

ROODHOUSE - Darrell D. Evans, age 80, of Roodhouse, died Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born March 30, 1930 east of Belltown in Greene County, the son of Kenneth Eugene and Leta M. Garrison Evans. He married Elinora M. Deck, October 29, 1950 at the Roodhouse First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Janvrin officiating, and she preceded him in death February 5, 2009.

Surviving are three daughters, Nora (husband Lyndell) Arnold of Jacksonville, Sherryl (husband Landon) Hicks of Hays, N.C., Carolyn Jo Evans of Normal, three sons, Patrick Evans of Roodhouse, Robert (wife Lynne) Evans of Carlinville, and Charles (wife Nancy) Evans of Winchester, twelve grandchildren, Teri (Chris) Paddock, Julie (Rich) Slunaker, Jed (Amanda) Arnold, Jessica (Andy) Wilson, Landon Hicks, Dallas (Jessica) Hicks, Drew (Lisa) Hicks, Kyle Hicks, Casey (Morgan) Evans, Mallory Evans, Nicholas Evans, Elisabeth Evans, and eleven great grandchildren, Samantha and Kayla Slunaker, Arianna Morris, Jarad Arnold, Ella, Anna, and Kara Wilson, Caleb, Logan, and Dylan Hicks, and Emma Paddock, and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are three sisters, Marilyn Meyer of St. Charles, MO., Shirley (Tom) Handlin of Eldred , and Linda Probst of Carrollton, and one brother Ronald (Rosemary) Evans of Carrollton. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael D. Evans, and a brother Donald Evans (surviving wife Doris, of Carrollton).

Mr. Evans attended schools in Greene and Morgan County. He served in the U.S. Army in 1952-1953, receiving basic training in California, seeing a year of combat in Korea, and being discharged in 1953 as a sergeant, after being stationed at Camp Crowder, near Neosha, MO. He had been employed as a truck driver for Columbiana Seeds, Thayne King and others, by the Postal Service at Union Station in St. Louis, Evans' Ford-Mercury in Carrollton, as well as others, spent his adult life as a farmer, and worked at Capitol Records in Jacksonville for a number of years before retirement. He was baptized by the late William Boston while attending Mt. Gilead Church and later transferred his membership to the Roodhouse First Baptist Church. His family, friends, and love for the outdoors enriched his life. He especially enjoyed time spent with his family and was a familiar figure in his pick-up with his large, black dog "Duke". He loved and was loved by his wife and family, including each grandchild and great grandchild, and will be missed greatly.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2011 at the Roodhouse First Baptist Church with burial at Fernwood Cemetery in Roodhouse. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church.
