Grant Frederick Mueller
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Grant Frederick Mueller, 94, died peacefully on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at his home in Springfield.
Grant was born June 14, 1920, in Ackley, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Marjorie Scales Mueller. He married Nell Beth Hawkins on June 25, 1949.
After graduating from Cornell College, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In August of 1943, he graduated from flight school and flew PB2Y Coronado seaplanes as part of the VPB-13 squadron in the Pacific theater of WWII. In May, 1944, his plane was shot down while on a bombing raid off the coast of Korea. Grant and his crew were picked up by another VPB-13 squadron pilot, William Kitchen, who landed his plane on the water, despite the fact that both seaplanes were being shelled by a nearby Japanese ship. Grant later received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his role in the bombing mission.
After the war, Grant entered the family wholesale business, George A. Mueller Company, and later ran the business until his retirement in the 1990's. Grant enjoyed repairing clocks, sailing, snow skiing and biking. He was a member of Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church and played an important role in the transition of Springfield College in Illinois to Benedictine University in Springfield.
He is survived by his sons, Jeff Mueller (wife, Maribel Rosario Mueller) of Springfield and Eric Mueller (wife, Kathy Anne Mueller) of Decatur, and three grandchildren: Whitney Brooke Mueller, Leif Richard Mueller, and Lance Phillip Mueller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Mueller in 2012, and his son, Phillip Mueller in 1989.
A private memorial service will be held.

Jeff and Family, Sorry for you loss. I feel like our families have always been connected and this feels like a loss for us as well. Grant was my grandfather's boss and we have seen the inside of Muellers many times as we grew up. Jeff was my professor and mentor while and after I attended SCI.We will think of you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Wow!! What an accomplished man! Now it makes sense. Only have gotten to know your Dad in the last 3-4 yrs, but it has been an absolute pleasure. He carried a light-heartedness about him that was quite contagious. He would make me laugh by exclaiming, with flair..."You're so young compared to me. Why, I'M 104 YEARS OLD!!" I loved that jestering.
Reading his obituary, I certainly see the absolute depth to Grant. Really ADMIRED him as I would see him work his tail off for the purpose of making his way into DAUMC. Jeff and Eric...God bless you guys and the kids...and most certainly your Dad. I won't forget him.
