John "Jack"
Joseph Marx
SPRINGFIELD - John "Jack" Joseph Marx, 82, returned to his heavenly home on June 23, 2015, after a valiant battle with a long illness. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Jack was born to the late Raymond and Susan Marx, in Springfield, Ill., on Feb. 17, 1933. He was raised of Christian faith that would be his lifelong support from an early age. He graduated from Feitshans High School in Springfield in 1951 where he was the captain of the football team as well as diving team and met the love of his life.
Jack was blessed with a large and loving family. He married his best friend and soul mate, Lorraine Lufkin, on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1953, at St. Patrick Church in Springfield. From the very beginning, he dedicated his children to God.
Jack was an outdoors man with a passion for his children, his fishing cabin on Patterson Bay and most of all, his wife. Jack was gentle at heart. He was kind and soft-spoken, and always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his Creator.
Jack is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his sons: John Michael (wife, Peggy), Kenneth Edward (wife, Darlene) and William Scott Marx; and his daughters, Janet Marx and Cassie Bergschneider.
Jack and Lorraine's beloved daughter, Patricia Ann Marx, preceded Jack in death on Jan. 15, 2010.
The couple has 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; as well as one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are a brother, Jim Marx, and sister, Susan Bolten. Several nieces and nephews are also loved by Jack, Lorraine and their family.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Raymond and Charles Marx, and sisters, Dorothy Gibson and Lucille and Velma Marx.
Visitation: 9:30-11:15 a.m., Friday, June 26, 2015, at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass: Noon, Friday, June 26, 2015, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Jack was truly a great guy - - I'm certain his family misses him dearly, as he was such a caring person. We grew up together on Wirt Avenue and I distinctly remember how athletic he was. I felt that if he hadn't had that accident damaging his hand, that he would have definitely have had some kind of higher athletic offer after going through high school. He, his brother Jim, Joe Canavan, and several others were all good buddies while growing up.

My condolences to you Lorraine and the whole Marx family. I have always had the fondest memories of my time with your family. Jack was the most kindest gentle soul, his family was his life. May god carry you through this most difficult time and give you strength. God saw him suffer way to long and took him home. God bless you and the Marx family. RIP Jack

Please accept my condolences and sympathy to Jack's family. He was a good and nice person, who I remember from (even) grade and high school days. I remember fondly the times he, his brother Jim, and I had growing up on Wirt Avenue. Not only was he a wonderful person, but also a great athlete with such natural abilities. He will be missed.
