SYLVIA FOLLMAN Obituary

July 18, 1927 - April 29, 2016

Sylvia G. Follman, lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 29, 2016. She was born July 18, 1927 in LaCrosse, WA, the third child of Norwegian immigrant parents, Perry and Signe Garberg.

At the age of nine, she moved with her family to Conway, WA and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1945.

She went directly to work at the First National Bank of Mount Vernon, transferring later to University National Bank in Seattle, upon her marriage to Perry S. Hatcher in 1948. They had three children, Sue, Scott and Brian, and in 1974 she married Judge Harry A. Follman of Mount Vernon.

Sylvia worked as a travel agent in Mount Vernon for many years before retiring to enjoy grandchildren, gardening and traveling with her husband. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

She was active in numerous civic and charitable organizations including, Patricia Hulbert Orthopedic Guild, Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, WA and Skagit Republican Women's Club. She was a University of Washington Husky fan, and for many years enjoyed line dancing, just for fun, and because of that the group she belonged to went to Branson, MO and performed at several of the theatres. She enjoyed her family most of all and friends, she loved to entertain, and proud to share her Norwegian heritage, having traveled to Norway several times.

She loved long ocean voyages with her husband Harry and friends, her annual car trips to Dallas, Santa Fe and favorite, California destinations, and took great pride in her lovely homes near La Conner and Burlington.

Sylvia is survived by her beloved husband, Harry of Burlington; her children, Sue Stewart of La Conner, Scott Hatcher and his wife Lorri of Santa Fe, NM and Brian Hatcher and his wife Betsy of Mill Creek, WA; brother, Randall Garberg and his wife Carol of Lynnwood, WA; grandchildren, Sarita, Ian, Jamie, Jensin, Riley Stewart, Lauren and Sonja Hatcher, Jamie Kamber and Molly Stevie of WA; step-children, John, Jay and his wife Sharil, Jim and his wife Kathy; step-grandchildren, Erika (Joey) Follman Moore, Jack Moore, Amanda and Nick Jack (Caitlin) Follman; great grandchildren, Lilah Claire Moore and Slater Jay Moore.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Perry and Signe Garberg; sister, Selma Garberg Johnson and brother, Glenn Garberg.

A memorial service will be held at Salem Lutheran Church, 2529 North LaVenture Road, Mount Vernon at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2016. The family suggests memorials to Salem Lutheran Church or Patricia Hulbert Orthopedic Guild.

You are one of my favorite aunts! I always loved visiting your house in La Conner. Especially when we would arrive on our boat. I'm so happy that we had such a nice conversation on the phone two weeks ago regarding mom's party. You are in our prayers and we will miss you.
