Edith Mae Miller

SOUTH BEND - January 25, 1920, in Broadlands, IL, Edith Mae Golden was born to the late Charles and Mary (Reed) Golden. At an early age, she became a ward of the state and a resident of a local orphanage home. She attended Mishawaka Public Schools and Riley High School, graduating from South Bend High School in 1939. She resided during her high school years as was the custom with local professionals who required help with their home and children, for room and board. The homes she resided in were: W.L. Bowen, H.H. Felgar and Mary Colip. After high school, she boarded with the Dr. Horace Hoare family, a local dentist, and became a close friend while helping with their 2 daughters. She was employed in 1939 at Associates Investments and retired after 33 years of service in 1972. In 1953, in LaPorte, she married Earl J. Miller, who died in 1987. They had resided in South Bend most of her married life. Other surviving relatives include a half brother, Charles James Brown of Indianapolis. There were many half and step-siblings she had lost track of. Also a stepdaughter, Betty Marie Miller Tucker of North Liberty. Although Edith had no children, she loved them and kept track of many nieces and nephews. Edith also leaves behind her special friend, Marilyn Sellers (Harley), who looked after her. Edith was a member of Northwest United Methodist Church since 1975; she served as church secretary, treasurer and board secretary. She and Earl were instrumental in initiating the Learning Center in 1978 and its ongoing programs. She was a volunteer for Hospice for many years. She bowled and golfed, and never had a bad word about anyone, and was a friend to everyone. Her favorite saying if you asked her how she was, was "never better." She will be greatly missed.
