Filiberto Anastasio Obituary

Filiberto Anastasio

June 2, 1937 - Dec. 23, 2020

CASSOPOLIS, MI -

Filiberto Anastasio, 83, formerly of Granger, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. He was born in Gioiosa Ionica, Italy to Michele and Michelina Anastasio and immigrated to South Bend, Indiana in 1953. He was a resident of Diamond Island, Michigan for 41 years and spent winter retirement in Dunedin, Florida for almost 20 years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Disabled American Veteran.

He worked the majority of his life as a Master Welder. He was a gifted cook, jack-of-all-trades handyman, and loved spending time at the lake. He never met a stranger, loved to make jokes, and bring a smile to everyone he met. He will be forever remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, and Nonno.

He is survived by his wife Carol of 48 years, son Filiberto (Abby) Anastasio, daughter Janea (Craig) Matherly, grandchildren Serafina and Fiorenzo Anastasio, and Isabella and Lillianne Matherly, brother Gregorio Anastasio, and sister Otilia (John) Stodola, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Carmelina, and brothers Francesco, Carlo, Luigi, Pasquale, and Vinicio Anastasio.

He will always be 16 and a few months to us.

A celebration of life will be planned later next year. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Sons of Italy Foundation, 219 E. Street NE, Washington, DC 20002, www.osia.org/donate-sif/

Mrs. Anastasio, Fil, Abby, Janea and Craig—
I only had the pleasure of meeting the original Fil once, but he was absolutely one of the sweetest gentlemen I’ve ever met. I also had the honor of hearing stories and little things like his funny English pronunciations of words sitting next to Fil at work for 5 years. My sincere condolences during this time.

Our deepest condolences to you Carol and your family for the loss of your loved one Phil.
We all loved Phil for his famous line “I’m 16 and a few months”. We will miss his smile and sense of humour and will cherish all the wonderful memories in our hearts. Love you Phil and thank you for being a great friend.
