Laurence Stein Obituary

STEIN Laurence B. Jr., adored husband of the late Geraldine deRochmont Stein, 93, married 57 years, died of old age and a broken heart in Amherst Massachusetts, surrounded by his children, on Septem ber 21, 2006. He was born in Mt. Vernon NY on January 11, 1913. He graduated from MIT in 1934 with an S.B. in Electrical Engineering and was a Navy World War II veteran. Much of his career was spent at Sigma Instruments as chief engineer. He held seven patents for his invention of a way to control electric distribution sys tems. After leaving Sigma, he continued consulting into his mid-80s. He was active in town politics serving on the Advisory Committee, School Committee and Elec tric Light Board. He was President of the Hingham Civic Orchestra and did the lighting for many productions of the Hin gham Civic Chorus. In 1970 he was awarded the Good Public Servant Award by the Sons of Italy. An avid sailor begin ning in the 1930s cruising the New Eng land coastline, until his recent decline he continued to enjoy sailing with friends and family in Hingham Harbor. His love of amateur radio began in college and con tinued for the next 60 years communicat ing with friends around the world via Morse code. He and his wife traveled throughout Europe. He was a founding member of The Hingham Beach Bums and a town resident for 60 years. He is sur vived by his four children Deborah Stein Peluse, Guilford, CT, Robert de Rochemont Stein of Proctor VT, J. April Stein of Shutesbury MA, Lauren Geraldine Falls of Melrose, MA and their spouses Charles Peluse, Kathryn Milillo, Alan Kurtz and Robin Peter Falls. He is survived by six grandchildren Michael Stein Peluse, Amy Michelle Earls, Benjamin Stein, India Kathryn Stein, Rafael Stein Kurtz and Julia Intia Stein Kurtz, as well as one nephew Alan Stein Jr. and two nieces Marian Valenti and Cindy Sweet. He was predeceased by his only sibling Alan Wallach Stein. Visiting hours omitted by request. In lieu of flow ers, please send contributions in Larry's name to The Trustees of Reservations, 572 Essex Street, Beverly, MA 01915. In ternment is to be private. A Memorial Ser vice will be held beginning at 1:30 p.m. on October 14, 2006 at The Old Ship Church, 90 Main Street, Hingham MA.
