Bertin Michel Cassou

BOILING SPRINGS, SC- Bertin Michel Cassou, 94, of Boiling Springs, SC, died Monday, March 6, 2017, at his home. Born September 25, 1922, in LaRochelle, France, he was the son of the late Bertin Emil and Germaine Compagnon Cassou and husband of the late Millicent Ann Usterday Baker Johnson Cassou.
Mr. Cassou was a uniquely stoic man with a dry sense of humor who fought the good fight. He received a BS Degree from Georgetown University and was the retired vice president of Riggs National Bank in Washington, DC. He was also a U. S. Navy Naval Aviation veteran of World War II, a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, a 3rd Degree Knight with The Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Spartanburg American Legion. Bert loved fishing and woodworking as well as the mountains and Chesapeake Bay and was an avid Washington Redskins fan.
Survivors include his son, Bertin Cassou, Jr. of Silver Springs, MD and John Cassou (Sarah) of Vienna, VA; daughter, Jeannine Llewellyn (Joe) of Birmingham, AL; stepson, Kenneth Paul Johnson (Mary) of Inman, SC; stepdaughter, Barbra Johnson (David Case) of the home; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his first wife, Rosalie Poston Cassou of Fredericksburg, VA; and his beloved four-legged friends, Mignon, Dahlia, and Kit Kat. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Rosalie Hayes; sister, Denise Hearing; and pet Labrador, Shae.
The Rosary service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, March 10, 2017, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, 235 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. Visitation will be 3:00-3:45 PM Friday, March 10, 2017, in the Parish Hall at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 161 N. Dean St., Spartanburg, SC 29302. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM at Historic St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael F. McCafferty and the Rev. Mr. Robert L. Mahaffey officiating. The committal service, with military rites, will be conducted at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 11, 2017, in Good Shepherd Memorial Park, 4164 Boiling Springs Rd., Boiling Springs, SC 29316.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bert's favorite charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000 Dept 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908 online at www.stjude.org; or Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
