Jan 17, 1937 - Dec 10, 2025
Benjamin Visscher Hole III passed away peacefully on December 10. He was born January 17, 1937, in Spokane. Ben attended Gonzaga Prep when it was an all-boys boarding school, then Stanford University, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology. He went on to receive his medical degree from Stanford Medical School and completed his residency at Georgetown University Medical Center. He served as a physician in the U.S. Navy at Treasure Island Naval Base near San Francisco. After his military service, he became Chief of Radiology at Mt. Diablo Hospital in Concord, CA. Ahead of his time in his approach to holistic health, Ben studied and practiced Tai Chi, fasting, nutrition, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and various spiritual traditions. These interests led him to leave allopathic medicine and become an internationally recognized practitioner and teacher of homeopathy. A pioneer in the field, he served on the faculties & boards of San Francisco State University, California State Homeopathic Medical Society, National Center for Homeopathy, and International Foundation of Homeopathy. With his second wife, he founded an International Academy of Homeopathy and, in 1983, served as a physician for the Fast for Life movement for nuclear disarmament. In 1988, Ben returned to his hometown of Spokane, where he established a thriving practice, Wholistic Family Medicine. Ben married Judy Pearson in 1961, and together they welcomed two daughters in Alamo, CA, before divorcing in 1980. In 1983, he married fellow holistic physician Dr. Linda Chiu Hole; together they built a family and medical practice in the Bay Area and later Spokane, welcoming four children before their divorce in 1993. He was later married for 20 years to Susan Hole Quackenbush, PhD, with whom he practiced pain management medicine prior to retiring. Her death preceded his own. A gifted physician and healer, Ben also possessed deep and wide-ranging knowledge of languages, philosophy, science, art & literature, grounded in a rich and abiding Catholic faith. Through his life's achievements and challenges, he maintained an unsinkable attitude, charisma, and charm. "Declare everything a victory" was one of his favorite sayings. His life had a lasting impact on many.
