Catherine HAWLEY Obituary

Catherine (Cathy) Ann Hawley (née Haag) passed away on April 26 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.

Cathy was born in Lewiston, Idaho, in 1952 to Pat and Terry Haag, but spent her life in Spokane. She married her lifelong love, Ken in 1973 and had five kids. While her kids were young, she ran a daycare from her home and took care of many children around South Hill. Cathy was a teacher at Adams Elementary for several years. She had a passion for teaching children to read.

Cathy was preceded in death by her husband, Ken; her parents, and older brother, Pat. She is survived by her five children, Mary Ellen Smith, Keith Hawley, Michael Hawley, James Hawley, and Dan Hawley; as well as eight grandchildren, John, Christina, Thomas, Katie, Colin, Nicole, Sarah, and Kenneth; and three sisters, Rose Becker, Jeannie Lyonnais, Mary Haag.

Cathy was religious her entire life and held a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Cathy was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, normally sitting in the front pew for most services. When asked why she sat in the front pew, she said it was so that people wouldn't have to turn around to see whose children were making noise during church. She has long held that her suffering in life would pave her way to heaven.

Rosary Service for Cathy will be on May 11 at 5 pm, followed by a Funeral Service on May 12 at 11 am, both held at Our Lady of Fatima. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to support the Alzheimer's Association.

Cathy & I first met as freshman at Streeter Hall at EWU (the first coed dorm). I will always recall her laughter; she was always smiling & laughing at our group´s antics & joining in!
Oh, her laughter was contagious!
I saw her when she worked at the Panda on NW Blvd & she told me she was in love with Ken & thought they would marry. Ken & my husband worked on a project together & Ken invited us to see his renovation & "big beautiful" barn. The kids were grown & they downsized & were so in love.
She was an amazing mother, friend, & teacher. Peace to the family for the loss of such a wonderful, fun loving woman!

I loved it when my mom would clean houses because it meant you were going to be taking care of me. I knew I´d be able to play with my cousins. I knew you would make my noodley soup just perfect and I knew I´d be showered with love. You are such a beautiful soul. I always thought it was cool you would have a beer once in awhile because our mom would NEVER. . You were so much fun.

We loved and admired our friend and neighbor Cathy Hawley . We lived next door to each other for over 20 years. She had so much love and compassion for others. Our sadness can be helped by imagining her reunion with her loved ones on the other side. Wish we could give MaryEllen, Keith, Mike, Jim and Danny a hug.

Cathy was an outstanding mother and friend. She cared for our daughter lovingly and with joy, including her in all the Harley family fun. Our love and prayers go out to all of Cathy´s children. Your mom was deeply appreciated by our family!
