James WALSH Obituary

Irish eyes were smiling in God's Kingdom on November 13, 2022, when James Joseph Walsh III, was welcomed into Eternal Life. Surely, he heard the pronounced judgment: "Well-done, good and faithful servant."

The only son and youngest of four siblings, Jim was born July 5, 1940, in Spokane, Washington, to James J. and Susan (Ring) Walsh. His father passed away when he was only nine years of age; his mother, when he was ten. His sisters - three courageous women, especially Peg - stepped up to raise him and to keep the family together. Jim attended the parish Catholic school (St. Ann) and in 1958 graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. He married Gerrie Forster in 1962 and together they blessed the world with three sons: James IV, Thomas, and Patrick.

Believing firmly in the need to share generously of time, talent, and treasure, Jim served others with integrity, distinction, and dedication. He took his social responsibilities and his Catholic faith seriously. For thirty-three years - from May 1963 until his retirement in January 1996 – Jim served on the Spokane Fire Department. For five years of that time, after attending the FBI Academy and Police Academy (graduating #1), he served as an arson investigator. In 1980 he was promoted to the position of Battalion Chief. Jim also was a very active member of St. Peter's Catholic Parish, not only helping to construct its church but also working for several years with a building crew on multiple church projects. Reflecting on his cherished Irish heritage, Jim knew the gift of gab, warmly welcoming others through a helping hand, a catchy sense of humor and play, and a hospitable heart. Many a family member and multiple friends shared his popcorn as he cheered on the WSU football team and Gonzaga men's and women's basketball.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, two of his sisters, and an infant grandson. He is survived by Gerrie, his wife of sixty years, their three sons and respective families, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews - as well his sister, Maureen Kaszycki.

Family and friends will gather at St. Peter's Catholic Church (3520 E. 18th Avenue) on Saturday, March 18, 11:00 A.M., to thank God for Jim's life and to ask Him to hold Jim in the hallow of His hand. Those wishing to do so may make a memorial contribution to the Building Committee of St. Peter's Church.

Jim helped raise many of us on the job. He was a master at loyalty as he cared and did so with great competence and humor. He will be greatly missed.

I have so many fond memories of visiting Jim, Peggy, Maureen and Kelly in Spokane when I was growing up. My Aunt Catherine would make a fun day of it for the Roche children by driving us over from Coeur d´ Alene for a visit .. which always included Mass, a meal and playtime. I still remember Jim and Kelly/Sister Fidelma riding bikes together. A nun on a bike was a rare sight in those days! The whole family was such a model of grace under pressure after their parents died and it was a privilege to know them.
