Jerry ALTIG Obituary

November 11, 1942 – August 9, 2025

Jerry Altig, 82, of Spokane, Washington, passed away on August 9, 2025, surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of faith, music, laughter, and love. Born on November 11, 1942, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. At the age of three he was adopted by Floyd and Esther Altig. Jerry spent his early childhood on the family farm alongside his sister, Marilyn. In sixth grade, the family left farming and moved to Portland, Oregon, before eventually settling in Quincy, Washington. He went on to graduate from Quincy High School.

Jerry attended Washington State University - Go Cougs! - where he was a proud member of Sigma Nu fraternity. During his college years, he also shared his gift of music as part of The Terriers, a singing trio that brought entertainment to campus events. The group's camaraderie endured for decades, culminating in a 40-year reunion performance. In the fall of 1963, Jerry met his soul mate, Judy Dix. They were married in 1964 and made Spokane their home. Jerry began his career in the insurance business before being recruited into the car industry, where he eventually purchased Sutherland Motors. He poured his energy not only into his business but also into serving his community - giving his time to the Guild School, Rotary Club, Whitworth Community Church's worship team, and coaching the Mead High School wrestling team.

Music was woven into the fabric of Jerry's life. Whether performing with a group, singing at church, or belting out tunes with his trusty karaoke machine, his voice and joy filled every room. He was also an avid runner, completing at least 25 marathons, though in recent years, he was quick to claim the number was at least 50, and you could tell by the grin on his face that he knew he was stretching the truth. On Coug game days, you could find him dressed in crimson and gray, with a Bud Light in hand, cheering them on! Jerry was known for his quick wit, his clever one-liners, and his ability to make people laugh. His sense of humor was matched only by his deep love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Judy; children, Chris (Pam), Curt (Laurie), and Colleen; grandchildren, Lauren, Chase, Colton, Caiden, Courtney, Cole, Keaton, Kellen, and Kelli; and great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Cooper, Saylor, Willow, Kampbell, Dylan, and Quinn; as well as his devoted lifelong friend, Pat Clark; and his "adopted" daughter, Terri Devlin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Esther; and his sister, Marilyn.

Jerry's life was marked by faith, love, and laughter. Spokane is better because he was here, and those who knew him will carry his music, his humor, and his unwavering kindness until we meet him again. The angels gained a voice that will never stop singing and a soul who knows how to make all of heaven smile.

A celebration of Jerry's life will be held Friday, August 15, 2025, at 11:00a.m., at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Spokane. To honor his spirit, we invite you to dress in a way that reminds you of Jerry. That might be Coug gear, a Mariners hat, a favorite Mead wrestling shirt, a Tommy Bahama shirt, a Bud Light tee, or some jorts. If traditional attire is more comfortable for you, bright colors are encouraged.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joya (formerly Spokane Guild School).

Absolutely loved Jerry. I consider him a big brother but also a mentor and good good friend. We shared so many conversations about family and faith and music, even about Mead wrestling. His love for life and love for others shown brightly. He always looked for a way to encourage others and make a difference.
