Jim Gillogly Obituary

June 29, 1932 - February 14, 2015 Jim was born and raised in Spokane Washington. He graduated from North Central High School in 1950. During his senior year, Jim earned a place on the High School All-American Baseball Team. Jim then moved on to Humboldt State University where he played baseball at the collegiate level. His college career was cut short when Jim felt a calling to join the U.S. Coast Guard where he proudly served his country for four years. Jim returned to Spokane where he met and married his wife Donna and began a family with his two children, Jerry and Patty. Settled in Spokane, Jim ran the family business, Barstone Fuel Company which later evolved to Barstone Ice Company. He was an active sponsor of the Barstone American Legion baseball team for more than 20 years. At one point he had three teams, one in the Colt League, American Legion League and Semi-Pro League. Jim fulfilled a dream of his in 1981 by taking a Semi-Pro team to Spokane's Sister City, Nishinomiya, Japan for the 100th anniversary of the two cities' relationship. Outside of Jim's involvement with the Barstone baseball teams, Jim continued to serve the community. Jim was instrumental in starting Junior Football in Spokane which is currently known as Spokane Youth Sports Association. He also was part of the group who brought the baseball field lights to Shadle Park so baseball can continue on past sunset. There was never enough time for baseball if you asked Jim. He also sponsored a youth hockey team. Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna, two children Jerry and Patty and two grandchildren, Hayden and Kayley. Jim's witty ways and gentle nature will be missed. The family is holding a Celebration of Life Open House in Jim's honor on Saturday, February 21st, 2pm onward at Wandermere Golf Course. They would like to invite Jim's family and friends to join them. Anyone wishing to give in honor of Jim can donate to the Shriner's Hospital, 911 W. 5th Ave, Spokane, WA 99204.

So glad Cindy and I got to spend time with Mr. "G" prior to his passing. Cindy and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think Jim did as well. He was perky and talking baseball till the end!! Many great memories for former Barstone players and others because of this man and his families generosity and the love of the game! Prayers to Jerry and his family. Just a great guy and family.

Donna, Jerry, Patty,
I have such fond memories of our two families together...dinner at our place or yours, watching the Wizard of Oz for the FIRST time in color on your colored TV set, and many more. I will remember Jim as gentle and smiling. He will be missed. Love and prayers to each of you.
