Sue KRUEGER Obituary

April 13, 1946 – July 26, 2023

Sue Krueger - beloved wife, mother, and grandmother - went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 26, 2023, at the age of 77. Born on April 13, 1946, to Chauncey and Lorraine Hoyt, Sue spent her childhood in Spokane, aside from a few years living near her mother's family in Danville, Ill. When she married Ken Krueger in 1970, they chose to raise their family in Spokane as well.

Sue was a graduate of Cheney High School and attended Eastern Washington University. She was an active member of several churches throughout her life, primarily First Baptist Church, Euclid Avenue Baptist (now New Hope Bible Church), and South Hill Bible Church, as well as a participant in Bible Study Fellowship. Music was an important part of her upbringing, and she enjoyed singing in church choirs and ensembles with family members.

Her first job involved working alongside her dad at Adams Tractor. She was later employed at Avis Car Rental and PNW Bell before devoting herself to the care of her children (and later grandchildren). She provided an elegant complement to her husband's work at Farm Credit Services, whether rooting on company softball teams, accompanying Ken on business trips across the U.S., or hosting parties at their home.

Sue considered it a privilege to invest herself full-time in homemaking and child-rearing. She cared deeply about children, always giving them her thoughtful attention, and was proud to encourage and support young mothers in her role as a MOPS teaching leader. As her own children grew, their friends always found a warm welcome at the Krueger house, and many saw Sue and Ken as their surrogate parents. She also enjoyed a special bond with her grandchildren, serving as first a caregiver and then their biggest fan and cheerleader.

After her first cancer diagnosis and treatments in 2016, Sue rallied to enjoy her final years, with a trip to the Oregon Coast, faithful attendance at her grandkids' performances, and regular outings with family. Like her sister Deb, she met cancer's return with serenity and good humor, knowing that death was not something to be feared and all was within God's plan. While in hospitals and St. Joseph's Rehab Center after a February stroke, she greeted every family member, friend, and caregiver with a smile and an uncomplaining attitude. She was blessed to spend her last days reunited with Ken in their South Hill Village apartment.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Debbie Spannagel. She is survived by her husband, Ken, children Kelli (David) Jones of Spokane and Todd (Sandra) Krueger of Elizabeth City, N.C., grandchildren Ben and Elena Jones, sister Sandi Astolfi of Kennewick, Wash., and her brothers-in-law and their families.

There will be a private inurnment service for the family. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Union Gospel Mission Women's and Children's Crisis Center in Spokane or to the Horizon Hospice Palliative Care Program.

Sue (and Ken) were always so welcoming to me and made me feel like family, even though I came into their lives as their daughter-in-law Sandra's best friend. I've spent countless hours in their home with them laughing and enjoying their company. When I lived in Spokane, it was always a treat to see them. And they never thought it odd that I sent them Christmas cards! My heart goes out to the entire family. I know I didn't know her a long time, but I cherish the time I did. You are all in my prayers.
