Michael Wald Obituary
Elmira - Dr. Michael Kingsley Wald passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, in the presence of his family. He was 81 years old.
Mike was born in Boston MA. He moved to Elmira in 1975, and after working for St. Joseph's Hospital he became one of the founding partners of Southern Tier Pediatrics. He retired in 1998 after more than twenty years caring for the children of Chemung County both as a physician and as a foster parent. In retirement, he volunteered as a mediator for the Community Dispute Resolution Center. Mike loved the outdoors, climbing mountains, cycling, and sailing, and he continued to hike locally up until his final months. He loved to sing and was a member of many local choral groups. He was a dedicated participant in the Friday morning Bible study at Mount Savior Monastery.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Wald; by his five children, Deborah of Boston MA, Judy of Elmira, Stephen of Urbana IL (with Rachel Whitaker), Rebecca of Baltimore MD (with Michael Nutt), and Juanita of Rochester NY; by his brothers, David of Amherst MA and Elijah of Philadelphia PA; by his sister Deborah of San Francisco CA; and by nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Elmira NY on Saturday, February 24th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial contributions to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier or to the First Presbyterian Church.
