Sylvia Friedman Obituary
Age 84, and a lifelong resident of Elmira, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2014. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Herman; brothers, Hyman Etkind of Bridgeport, CT and Lawrence Etkind of Philadelphia, PA; brother-in-law, David Friedman of Farmington Hills, MI; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Abbe Friedman of Bloomfield, CT; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Susannah Friedman of Wallingford, PA; grandchildren, Scott Friedman, Michael Friedman, Zoe Friedman and Rebecca Friedman; also cousins, nieces, nephews, and devoted friends. Sylvia was the daughter of Israel and Shirley Etkind. Sylvia was a member of Congregation Kol Ami and of Hadassah. She was a dedicated teacher in the Elmira City School District where she taught elementary school for over 30 years. Sylvia was a graduate of Elmira College where she received her Bachelor's degree. Sylvia also did graduate coursework at Cornell University. Funeral services were held graveside in Franklin Street Cemetery, Elmira, Wednesday, May 28, at 11:00 a.m. Abraham Golos officiated. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorials to Congregation Kol Ami, 1008 W. Water St., Elmira, NY 14905. ARRANGEMENTS BY BAKER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.

Herman, Ken, and Steve, I send my sympathy to each of you on your loss of Sylvia. I did a lot of work on your Roricks Glen home after the 72 flood. Of course you were just kids then. I remember when Ms.Etkind taught at Diven School in the 1950's.What a truly wonderful lady and great teacher.

My heart goes out to the entire Friedman family. I have warm memories of spending time at your house, primarily with a group of teens in the basement. Mrs. Friedman was warm and welcoming, and would give sage advice to me (and other young women) about how we deserved both success and happiness.
