Andrew Duer Obituary

Andrew Adgate Duer IV, "Ad", was an entrepreneur, adventurer, loving father and friend. He passed away unexpectedly while visiting one of his daughters and her family on February 24, 2024 at the age of 68.

The son of Andrew Adgate Duer III, a Baltimore attorney and World War II veteran, and Phyllis Bolton Duer, a homemaker and World War II nurse. Ad was born in January 1956 and raised in Owings Mills, MD. He graduated from Gilman School in Baltimore and went on to earn both his BA in Political Science (International Relations) from Colorado College and his MBA in Finance from the University of Puget Sound.

He spent his post-college years in finance and helping to build, turn around and consult for many businesses. He moved back to Maryland in the mid 2000s and eventually settled in Easton, MD. In recent years, he spent intermittent time in Ukraine where he found purpose and community in teaching students English. Ad was a past member of the Greenspring Valley Hunt Club and a member of the Society of the Cincinnati.

In his own words, Ad was "a writer, a poet, an actor, and a creative". He was a vibrant, spirited, wildly intelligent, eccentric, complex, brave and deeply loving man. Ad is survived by his daughters Avery (Scott) and McKay (Matt), his five grandchildren, and his sisters Margaret (Harsharan) and Bo (David). The burial and service will be private at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Owings Mills, MD.

I worked with Ad 30-odd years ago. He was smart and interesting. We kept in touch over the years, and I considered him a friend. The last time I was in contact with him he said he was in Ukraine. He was a one-of-a-kind guy. He will be missed.

OMG, I just realized it’s been 32 years since I had the amazing opportunity to work for him.not 20 years! Ooops.
Doesn’t matter, Ad was truly amazing! Although it’s been decades since I had the opportunity to work with him, I will ALWAYS remember him!

I worked for Adgate Duer back in 1992 (while he served as President of Pro-Med Medical, near Seattle, WA.)
Adgate was hired during a truly challenging time at Pro-Med Medical, a family-owned medical supply company in the 1990’s.I was in my early 20’s at the time.
I recall, at that time, he drove an older Peugeot (a European-made car at that timeand I drove an Audi.)
One morning, I came into work early, and he walked past my office and said, “Howdy.”
I thought he said, “Audi”.and I quickly responded, “Peugeot!”and he burst out laughing!
He was truly a great gentleman and boss.and although it’s been 22 years since I worked for him, (I’ve since moved back to MN), he has always stuck out in my mind as a truly great leader. He was kind, firmand fair. He was personable and communicated SO well. I recall he shared with our staff the story of working for Dain-Bosworth in London, (earlier in his career).and told us that a robot delivered their office mail! We were so impressed by that.especially back in the early 1990’s.
Anyway, I so wish I’d had the opportunity to catch up with Adgate.but I hope his family and colleagues knows how special he truly was.
