DAVID CURRY Obituary

CURRY

With great sadness, we share the sudden passing of Dr. David Mitchell Curry (“Mitch”) on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

Born July 14, 1968 to John S. Curry and Susan C. Moses, Mitch grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. Grandparents Gwen and Colonel Bob Lipscomb, Uncle James Wilhite, and Aunt Mary Wilhite played an integral role in shaping the remarkable person he became. He attended Western Hills High School and Stephen F. Austin State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. His passion for learning never ceased. He earned a Master of Educational Leadership and Administration at Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2003 and a Doctor of Educational Leadership and Administration at the University of North Texas in 2016. He had a long and distinguished career in Education as an accomplished band director and campus principal, most recently as the principal at Scott Johnson Middle School in McKinney. He was named the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals Region 10 Middle School Principal of the Year in 2017 and earned the Phi Delta Kappa Distinguished Leadership Award in 2018. Always a leader of leaders, Mitch accepted an appointment as adjunct professor in the Principal Preparation Program at Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2019. In 2021, he began a new career with the McKinney Municipal Courts as a Judicial Clerk. He was an active member at Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as an ordained elder, taught adult Sunday School, volunteered in the youth program, and shared his musical talents by playing trumpet in worship services. Mitch lived with intention and enthusiasm and always strove to help others. He never missed an opportunity to make a new friend. He was an exceptional husband, father, friend, mentor, educator, and musician. He enjoyed many interests; the most recent being flying and pickleball.

He will be deeply missed by his family: wife Valerie, sons Cole and Cooper, dogs Sandy and Whiskey, and his relatives, friends, and colleagues.

Valerie and her family are especially grateful to Charles W. Smith & Sons Funeral Home in McKinney for their assistance and for the love and support of their church family.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Presbyterian Church (5871 Virginia Pkwy, McKinney). The service will be livestreamed.
