Peter Saffo Obituary

PETER WILLIAM SAFFO Peter William Saffo, 62, of Hampstead, N.C., fell asleep in the Lord in the hope of the Resurrection at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care on January 17, 2020 in the loving presence of family and friends. He succumbed to an aggressive and rare form of kidney cancer after a valiant seven- month struggle. The son of the late William Peter and Angeline Batuyios Saffo, Peter was born in Athens, Greece on November 8, 1957 and was a life-long resident of the greater Wilmington area. He attended Forest Hills Elementary School, Cape Fear Academy, and Hoggard High School, class of 1976. His work career involved a variety of different endeavors. Starting out as an insurance salesman, he then owned and operated L.U. Carriers (a long-distance trucking company), after which he assumed proprietorship of the Snak Mart which later became the Sunrise Breakfast House on the corner of north Market St. and Gordon Rd. For the past several years, he was the accountant for Saffo Contractors, a job that suited him perfectly, given that from childhood he had a special talent with numbers. Peter was a devoted husband and father, and a dedicated communicant of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. As a youth, he served as an altar boy and, as an adult, he was a member of the parish council, most significantly in the office of Treasurer. He was also a member of the Wilmington Chapter Therma #10 of the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America, an organization founded by Greek immigrants from his parents' ancestral island of Icaria. He is survived by his wife, Kim Brookshire Saffo, his daughter, Chloe, his son and daughter-in-law, William (Billy) and Jessie Saffo and their two sons, Nicholas and Ben. Also left to cherish his memory is his sister, Kay Saffo Skandalakis of Wilmington and her daughters, Joanna Skandalakis of Orlando,FL and Angelique Simpson (Louis) and children, Mia and Everett, together with numerous aunts and uncles and many cousins. Over the course of his life, especially during the past twenty years, Peter committed the entirety of his being to Christ and grew into a person of strong and unwavering faith. It was this faith that enabled him to establish his priorities in their proper order, this faith that guided his steps and directed his actions, this faith that gave him the steadfast conviction and blessed assurance that a new life awaited him beyond this earthly one; a new life of divine peace, boundless grace, and infinite love in the arms of his Savior and Redeemer, the Risen Lord, who will be his everlasting light. A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, January 25, 2020, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 608 South Road, with Fr. Steven Klund, Fr. Regis Alexoudis, and Deacon Tom Fernandez officiating. Interment will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Dr. at Bradley Creek. Pallbearers will be Bill Batuyios, John Capra, Robert Diab, Mayor Bill Saffo, Nick Saffo, and Dr. Louis Kantounis. Visitation will take place at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel,1617 Market St. Wilmington from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, January 24, 2020 with a Trisagion prayer service at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts and contributions be made in Peter's name to NHRMC Foundation (2001 South 17th St. Wilmington, NC 28401) in honor of the excellent care Peter received at the Zimmer Cancer Center; or to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 608 S. College Rd., Wilmington, NC 28403 (in the name of Peter Saffo). Condolences may be sent to the family at www.andrewsmortuary.com

Peter was my first friend when my family moved to Wilmington from Cincinnati in the early 1970s. We were both 15. His smile, laugh, and spirit immediately drew me to him. We camped together, boated and waterskied together, and took part in numerous mischievous endeavors, as adolescents will do. When I went away to college, we weren't able to spend as much time together, but my fondness and personal connection with Peter never waned. He was one of my groomsmen in my wedding. Peter shined. He blue eyes and grin were captivating. Of course, girls absolutely adored him. I loved Peter and told him so several times over the last months. I will miss him terribly.

My family and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Peter.
In my communication with Peter, he knew Christ was with him and
was prepared to depart this world.
Peter and I enjoyed playing golf together at Cape Fear Country
Club and took pleasure being on Greek Time since there were never
any tee times at the club.
Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend the soul of thy servant Peter.,
and beseech thee to grant him rest in the place of thy rest, where
all thy blessed Saints repose, and where the light of thy countenance
shineth forever.
Everlasting be his memory!

Peter, Kim and Chloe often attended our Antiochian Orthodox church in Myrtle Beach. His big smile and warm personality will be missed by all here as his family was a part of ours. He is gone too soon; however, we take comfort that he is with our Lord and Savior who he dearly loved. May his Memory be Eternal.

Peter was one of the good ones, this is for certain. One of our wonderful memories of Peter was seeing him relax on the beach at Faro, Ikaria-Greece with his loving family nearby. We will be missing him, however we will always remember him. Rest in peace dear Peter, and wishing peace and strength to Peter's dear family and friends as they mourn his loss. Respectfully, George & Renee Livanos

There are never enough words when consoling a family's loss. Peter is in Heaven with no more pain or suffering. Our Lord Jesus guaranteed that by giving his life on the cross. I met Peter when I was 14 and he was 15. What a contagious smile he had and we instantly became friends! To top that off he gave me the best gift that can be given, our son. Billy, your dad and I are so very proud of the man you became. You are so full of love, compassion and kindness. What a great father, husband and son you are. May you find peace knowing he loved you! My prayers are for you, Chloe and Kim during this difficult time
I love you son!!

I have many fond memories of Peter and Kay at Forest Hills Schools. He was such a fun little boy to be friends with. The last time I spoke with Peter, I had just adopted my son from Guatemala, C. A. and he was trying to have a child with his new wife. We spoke briefly and discussed the options of having children. I am so happy to see that he had his little girl who looks so much like him. I know he adored his family. He will be missed. I also know his family will be forever blessed with his memory.

I remember Peter fondly from childhood days at Forest Hills school. Growing up in those neighborhoods we all knew each other. I have thought of him when passing the house on Wayne Dr. he was very kind. I lost touch after that and was saddened to see this obituary. I am so very sorry for your loss and deepest sympathies to you all.

To Kay and the entire family:

So sorry to hear of Peter passing. Have many great memories of seeing him in our youth at Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington. My mother and aunts were very close to his parents. I will never forget Peter's infectious smile and beautiful blue eyes, but how kind and respectful he was to our whole family. I last saw him at last year's Greek Festival in Wilmington and he looked great and did not realize he was suffering poor health. We will not forget him and keep his memory eternal through our prayers. May God bless your family and friends and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers in Charlotte. May his memory be eternal!! Much love to you.--Nick X. Nixon
