Brutus Hanks Obituary

Brutus Bentley Hanks Brutus Bentley Hanks was born on December 2, 1915, in Ivan, Texas, to Lloyd and Ada Hanks. He passed from this life to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 26, 2006. He was married to Helen Averitt in Haskell, Texas on December 27, 1935; and they celebrated seventy years of joyful life, roses and love notes. Brutus was in the grocery business for 50 years in Midland, Abilene, Monday, and Big Spring, Texas. In his early years, he and his three brothers worked in the family grocery business ~ H & H Food Store ~ owned by his father, Lloyd. His work in the grocery business was interrupted briefly as he and his brothers volunteered to serve in the military, with Brutus faithfully serving his country in the United States Navy. Following World War II, Brutus and his brother, Jack, stayed in the grocery business. He operated "Hanks Superettes" ~ seven smaller stores and then consolidated his grocery business into one store in Midland where he worked until he retired in 1986. While living in Midland, Brutus served as President of the Midland Evening Lions Club. He and his wife Helen were also charter members of the Golf Course Road Church of Christ. Brutus and Helen moved to Georgetown, Texas in 1997. He was a member of the Georgetown Church of Christ and was looking forward to worshipping the Lord in the new worship center soon to be completed. Brutus was preceded in death by his parents ~ Lloyd and Ada Hanks; two sisters, Beulah Dunlap and LaNelle Johnston; and three brothers, Jack Hanks, J. B. Hanks, and Sterling Hanks. He is survived by his wife Helen of Georgetown; two sisters, Graca Everton of Seattle, Washington and Kitty Owings of Bryan; one sister-in-law, Patsy Hanks of Georgetown; four children, Don Hanks of Rockport; Mary Jane Saikin of Austin; Dr. David Hanks of Plano; and Kim Hanks of Austin and their spouses. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, as well as, a host of friends and brothers and sisters in Christ who loved him dearly. There will be a private family graveside service followed by a memorial-celebration service at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 29, 2006, at the Georgetown Church of Christ, 1525 W. University Avenue (Hwy 29), in Georgetown, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Georgetown Church of Christ Building Fund, 1525 W. Some of the fondest memories of my childhood were of Mr. Hanks. All the kids from Sam Houston Elementary stopped at Hanks Store after school to buy candy. Mr. Hanks must have had the patience of a saint, with 20 screaming kids running through his store every afternoon. I remember searching the alley's in the neighborhood looking for bottles to redeem at Hank's for a nickel so we could buy more candy. I was deeply saddend by the news of his passing but it brought a flood of fond memories of a wonderful man. I wanted to let you know how much a part of my life Mr. Hanks was to all of the kids in the area. I have not stepped foot in that store for over 30 years, but my memories of Mr. Hanks will be with me forever.
