David Campos Obituary

Retired Major David Charles Campos Retired Major David Charles Campos, was called to duty by our Lord, April 6, 2012. David was born to Cruz and Margarita Campos, on February 8, 1947 and grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, the oldest of five brothers and sisters: Rosie, Edward, Ruben, Veronica and Nilka. David married Mary Anne Coleman on December 30, 1967 in Laredo. David is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Campos; his five children: Mark and his wife Paula, James and his wife Rebecca, Charles and his wife Mandy, Annie and husband Steven Witt and Joseph. He was also blessed with 11 grandchildren: Stephanie, Garrett, Jonathon, Abigail, Victoria, Marissa, Christian, Lyric, Colin, Phoenix, Ethan and, in memory, Joey. He was also blessed with three great- grandchildren. He served 20 years as battalion commander of the 249th MSB in the U.S. Army and National Guard. As a trainer of our troops, he taught survival escape and evasion, as well as marksmanship. He also served three years in the Texas State Guard as battalion commander. His command included search and rescue and security for the then Governor of Texas, George W. Bush. David taught GED to women in abusive relationships while serving as president of the Christian Women's Job Corps of Austin. His work earned him several awards and accolades for his teaching skills and unusually high success rate. After David's time in the Service, he worked five years for Weight Watchers as a District Supervisor, five years for MHMR, and 17 years with the Texas Employment Commission. He also worked five years as print shop owner and three years as a restaurateur. While his children were growing up, he was active in their extracurricular activities as a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Girl Scout Leader. In David's golden years, he served two terms as President of the Saint George's Court Resident Council insuring that the codes for the retirement community in which he lived were monitored and reviewed. He also served 17 years as a Board member to CommUnity Care ensuring that the quality of medical care in the Austin area was kept to high caliber standards. Visitation will be held Tuesday April 10th from 3 to 6 p.m., with a service starting at 5 p.m. at Austin Peel and Son Funeral Home.

David was a man of integrity and wisdom. He always had a smile on his face to share not only with the people he knew and those he did not know. He was an amazing man, and what a gift he left...his legacy. Looking forward to seeing him in heaven!

My thoughts and prayers are also with David and his family. I was so blessed to have worked with him on the Board at CommUnity Care. He leadership and service will always serve as benchmark for service to the community. I am so deeply saddened to learn of his loss.
